Currently planning an extension and renovation on a 1930s house we are hoping to knock an external wall at the back of the house to make an open plan kitchen/dinning/sitting room. Any one know is this difficult to do and if it’s expensive?

Bungalow or two storey? Complete rear wall to be knocked or are you keeping some of it? What is the length of the opening/s? Is it a 'simple' roof i.e ridge line over the centre of the house between front and back walls.

Simple approach is to prop the rear roof off the floor provided the floor is of 'reasonably' good construction. Install a steel beam to carry the load of the roof that was carried by the rear wall. build piers/columns under the new beam depending on its size and design. Complete the roof of the extension the walls of which would have been built before the demolition.

Best of luck. Dont forget planning permission if required.

Thanks! It’s a 2 story the wall is about 4 metres with a double window of 1 metre currently in it. would like to knock as much as possible but if we have to leave bits at the side to make it easier would do that

Mass concrete ! Would that make it more difficult to knock

It could be stretching it. Some mass concrete houses had very poor concrete in them. Low newton and river gravel used.

It could come down in a shot, I’ve wore the shirt.
