The Crescent Nebula in extremely high resolution, as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope.

The recently-launched JWST may have stolen Hubble's thunder, but the 32 year old HST clearly shows in this stunning image that it can still do cutting-edge astronomy. 😎👍👍🔭

Interestingly, this nebula was created by a star that is still alive. It is the result of fast stellar wind impacting slower stellar wind the star expelled out in its past. This results in a gas-ionising shockwave that produces this beautiful structure we see today.

The Crescent Nebula is 5,000 light years distant in the direction of the constellation Cygnus.

    It's beautiful.

Am I correct in assuming that this was it 5000 years ago do as the light from it would have taken that long to get here?

So is it still there and would it even look the same? The only way for humans to know is to invent a way to travel through vast amounts of space quickly which is not going to happen during our lifetimes :( or to see it again in 5000 years time by which time any if us here will be long dead and forgotten.

So I suppose for us that is how it is.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.
