My AWS is already warmer than yesterday’s AWS maximum.

    26.2c at 1.15pm today versus 26.1c yesterday around 5.30pm

2006 was pretty disappointing after the exceptional hot July. There was some decent warmth early on but there was a good amount of cloud and showers here in the east. Very poor month for eastern England and the Low Countries.

2013 was changeable, fairly cloudy but relatively mild/warm often. Rather dry, a non-descript ok usable month. I found it pleasant.

2018 started off warm but if you recall, it turned out cloudier than anticipated and was nothing like the previous spells of the great summer then much of the month was changeable southwesterly with the east escaping a lot of rain. Despite that, the grass still all magically turned green again..

2021 was often cool and changeable, very cloudy. The 23rd to 28th was very sunny with some foggy mornings but unlike the July heatwave, it did not counteract the very cloudy rest of the month in the stats. Not that warm here in the east with often an onshore easterly breeze.

A common theme of all of them, cloudy... though 2021 had a lovely sunny spell.

I would rank this summer right up there among the best for Dublin, couple of bad weeks in June but July and August have been exceptionally warm and dry. I see Dublin airport is even recording 26 degrees at 1pm, never a surprise to see those temps and higher in Phoenix park and casement but Dublin airport is even getting great temps consistently this summer.

lovely weather here in northwest today, beautiful blue skies, you can just sense the joy for people walking around in it, they are all telling me it was a poor July up in Donegal. Beautiful this week though, i timed my visit well !

Agreed about Dublin, I think it’s been a very good summer. Okay it’s been quite cloudy at times but there hasn’t been any substantial rainfall or other bad weather in what feels like months now.

24 on the west cork coast here (warmer in the city im told!), feels a lot hotter though in the direct sun and lack of wind. Pure blue skies, literally not a single cloud. What a day

    The sky is unreal.

I brought my son to an outdoor swimming pool at 1 pm and he wouldn’t stay in it. Sun was too strong I think.

Met have also confirmed it reached 28.5C max and is still rising they say. This is the highest August temperature since 2003 now.

The dry ground is really heating up in the south midlands and south east, pushing the temperature up that wee bit extra.

Absolutely beautiful day in Dublin. Looooong may it last.

August 1995 was special. No cool nights under 10c until the very end of the month bar 5th August.

I worked outdoors every day that month and I remember 2nd August, 31.5c, very well. Hazier than today. But a stunning scorcher. I was picking stones, rocks draining land all that beautiful summer.

Once again, missing Dublin 16 in this weather. I see Churchtown reporting 27c.

19.2c atm in Greystones. Will warm up later as the sea breeze dies off and the land breeze gets going.

28C at Dunshaughlin. I wonder could we squeeze a 29C here tomorrow. Somewhere in Ireland will reach 30C tomorrow and possibly 31C on Friday. Today is only the start of the heatwave.

The plastic cup example on the right is sitting on more or less bare and even soil meaning that the whole rim of the cup is touching the ground, therefore no air can get in so the water has no option but to soak into the soil over time, only within the confines of the cup.

The other two examples are on grass, the rim will not have full contact with the ground as the grass will keep the cup elevated and so air can get in and allow the water to seep out all around and soak into the ground over a wider area, beyond the cup.

I understand what Rob is trying to demonstrate but for someone who is in the department of meteorology, that is a terrible demonstration. I do agree that heavy rain on parched ground does lead to a lot of run off but his demonstration is a terrible one.

Sweet suffering Jesus an innocent post turns in to a climate change propaganda agenda conspiracy. Fk me no escaping the lunacy on here even if you avoid the looney climate change threads with self professed “experts”. There’s zero mention of climate change in the tweet. It simply shows that dry soil increases the risk of a flash flood and that’s the only intention I had behind my post. The absolute reaching is unbelievable with links to Wikipedia lol.

There’s enough of shite/looneyness in the CC thread with polluting this thread with absolutely shite as well. Anyway can’t be bothered with absolute nonsense so I’ll leave you to it.

I think what's actually making the colour visible in the that photo are the fields of golden crops.

GFS 12z extending the very warm weather to at least Wednesday. Met Eireann may have to extend their heatwave warning to Tuesday. Leinster stays in mid twenties all the way to next Thursday so at least another 8 to 9 days of mid twenties to go. However the settled Spell ends on Sunday as there will be a risk of thunderstorms from Sunday evening to next Wednesday as high temperatures and instability may well become quite volatile.

29.2 degrees recorded today in oak park, highest august temp in 20 years

My climate change bit was a tongue in cheek quip but I can understand how it looked like it was serious so I've removed that section of my post.

Saturday looks like the peak of the heat with some Spanish/African sourced air reaching us which will result in low 30s across southern half of the country.

They are experimentalists, the people who can't interpret an observation outside experiments to save their lives while getting everyone else into trouble.

Judging from your following response, you are a good candidate for that type of hype.

Temperature has dropped to 17c in Sligo from 24c a couple of hours ago. There's a noticeable cool breeze now. That persistent cloud out in the Atlantic is making it feel a bit chilly in the evening here especially in the shade.

Also shocked by how quick sun set yesterday. It was gone down by 9. I thought sunset was still near 930 for some reason.

There was an interesting piece on Sky News last night, showing somewhere in the SE Of England, and some streams that would normally be about 2 or 3ft deep, totally dry and have been for weeks.

I guess it was something like this that caused the record temperature for Ireland.
