Looking at 'smart sockets' controlled from your phone: how do they connect to your phone when there's no wi-fi in the house? Do any of them have some SMS capability?

They generally need WiFi to work. There are some GSM controllable devices around, but remember each of them would need their own SIM card and corresponding payment plan

Yeah, wifi is pretty much the backbone of a smart home.

You might find some that you can do very basic operations via Bluetooth, but generally you just use the Bluetooth to connect to it to set up the wifi connection. I really can't see how you would be able to control a number of them via Bluetooth only as you would only be able to connect to one at any one time.

Is there a reason you are looking to avoid wifi?

Thanks. We don't have wi-fi in the house, our home is not 'smart' at all. Quite happy with just using 4G data on iPhone. Spocker above is probably right, about needing a SIM.
