recovering red water cow with no milk

we are treating a cow for red water and we have notice she has no milk for her calf. will she come back into milk. she slowly eating and getting back her self.

Give her some dairy nuts to keep her going. Can the calf steal some milk from another cow. They usually survive that way.

we noticed the calf stealing off other cows. it will be hard to give her nuts, shes a young limousin cow in the field with herd now. we thought she do better with the herd now

As Patsy said above you'd be better off if she got dairy nuts/maize meal w/rolled oats etc to help her overcome the redwater especially considering that she is a young cow. Could you not take another cow&calf from the herd as company and move them in with her and her calf into a paddock/small field. At the end of the day if the young Limousin cow doesn't regain her weight coming into Winter then she may slip the calf that she is possibly carrying or not have enough condition to go back in calf in Spring.

Some additional vitamins/minerals daily would help. Find a suitable tonic and toss the daily dose in on top of the nuts.

A pouron tick repellent for the rest of the herd could be considered.

she lost the calf she was carrying. we have her eating silage but she looks bad. it will take time for her condition to come back

This doesn't sound good.

If a cow looks bad a week on after red water it's not good.

IMO she is a loss. The vet just hasn't broken the news

Always a danger to in-calf animals with redwater is throwing calf, temperature goes very very high for short time and then low. Is the cow passing dung? If she is should recover and go back in calf again

We used to make watery porridge " gruel" for weak animals to get stomach going

Did she have a transfusion?

Is she drinking much water?

If she's getting hard to get milk and flesh built up, I can't see the worry in getting her into calf. Get condition on her and move her on.

If she has survived this long there’s a good chance she’ll make it now imo, where there’s life there’s hope, the dead ones never got better here.

If she is passing dung and is now clear in the water, she should make it now, give her ivy and maybe dig a sod of clay with some nice grass on it, she will nibble at these. She needs to build up her natural minerals again, get some rolled oats and feed them to her too to give her energy. It will take a while to get her back to herself as she has had a rough time.

As Minerleague said you now have to hold her for 7 months with the injection withdrawal, so out here in a month or two see how she is. She will go back in calf if you wish to keep her, but it could be 3 -4 months before she comes around.

Any update on the cow?

The cow is alive, eating grass and getting her condition back. She lost her calf for next year. Plus she dried up so no milk for this year's calf. We are thinking about selling her but not to a factory as she has the red water injection. It takes seven months to wear off. Happy she is always alive but not happy with no calf for next year. We also paid to have her genotyped.

You may as well keep and fatten so that she is factory fit March/April time when beef is traditionally lower supply.

Announcing her for sale in the mart with a 6-7month withdrawal period. Hard to even see a bid.

How did you manage with her calf.

I have a cow that has very little milk, so the calf is getting supplemented, 400g rolled oats, 400g mix of crunch & beef 16. He is doing ok, with a bit of a belly on him.

The calf is on weanling ration and is stealing off another cow. A bit of a belly but doing fine.
