HP Printers and Instant Ink

I have two HP Printers here - one is c5 years old and using the Instant Ink re-ordering process. 2nd one is just over 6 months old and the 6 months free ink offer has expired. Can HP genuinely prevent me - remotely - using non-HP/refilled cartridges on this 2nd one?
