Yup but youd never see that approaching the south coast of ireland and moving up the country, staying intact. it would die a death and fizzle out,but for some unknown reason.

Some of the most punchy storms I have witnessed occurred in winter, when temps are far lower than the are now, and they usually come in of the sea as well.

I think if the winds had been a lot slacker today that storms would have had greater potential to break out across the country.

    New Moon

For anyone using Met Eireann for tracking the rain, I see that a radar site went down after 18:50. Coverage in the south east and east is inaccurate at the moment as a result. I cross checked with Netweather radar (which is not that great in many parts of the country) and it confirms it. There looks to be some hefty cells moving north through Wicklow and up the Irish Sea at the moment, which appear like not much on the Met Eireann site.

Some potent little cells popping up in the north Midlands. Don't be surprised if there are some sparks from some of them soon.

Thunder and lightning near Roscommon town

Widespread heavy convective showers tomorrow as the Lp moves in over the South of the country. Might be a messy profile and CAPE fairly skinny but thunderstorm potential greater than today. Subtle converging winds up through the atmosphere and later interest along Atlantic coastal counties with converging surface winds giving some instability interest under colder air aloft. DP's higher tomorrow too as modest diurnal heating peaks in the afternoon. Potential for some heavy local rainfall totals and Southern counties again showing up as having the highest totals, might have yellow warning extended. One of those days that if thunderstorms break out more widespread then on the spot warnings might be issued for much of the country perhaps. Been very difficult getting anywhere near an accurate forecast recently, maybe the slower moving systems given a longer chance to mature might increase chances tomorrow.

Never give up trying to figure it out always learning to be got from every potential set up!😁

Thunderstorms might increase off the South of the country overnight into the early morning drifting close to the coast.

For the amount of thunder warnings issued recently the reality is very few places even got a rumble. These warnings are a bit of a nonsense, if this was the 80s or 90s we would just be told there would be heavy showers with a risk of thundery downpours. And that would have hit the forecast right on the button! There's an overuse of these warnings in Ireland that doesn't seem to happen across the water!

I do however agree with Meteroite that tomorrow has better chances as the low moves in over the country. It would be ironic if we get no thunder warning tomorrow and the weather kicks off!!

Some activity off the wexford coast a little while ago

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,219 ✭✭✭Gaoth Laidir

Absolutely agree with the overuse of Yellow "warnings". No need for them at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,993 ✭✭✭Storm 10

Mad showers in Galway flooding the roads in seconds no sparks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,351 ✭✭✭highdef

Over 50 strikes so far from the storm in the Clones direction......would be good if we had any posters based there for reports.

Another storm near Athboy and I would not be surprised if the shower developing over Trim gets sparky.

so instead of wallpapering a warning over the entire country to cover themselves, they now add a county when the thunderstorm has already broken out...what a joke of a met service.

Status Yellow - Thunderstorm warning for Meath, Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal

Some sparks near me but nothing major

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,233 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Not as widespread as I thought there could be today but a fair amount nonetheless.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,233 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Lp drifting slowly away to the E, light winds up through the atmosphere giving light amounts of shear with subtle convergence at surface level, modest cold air aloft, fair diurnal heating getting up to the high teens or 20C with maybe more in the way of longer spells of sunshine and helping to evaporate and lift some of the surface moisture that has fallen over the last few days and aiding convection and instability .

First Sounding for Boyle Co Roscommon at 14.00, Cap a bit stronger tomorrow but CAPE although skinny might have enough energy to break through, KO INDEX reading of -4 which is higher than today would indicate a fair chance of Thunderstorms and heavy showers. Hit and miss as usual but light winds brining the maturing convection to its peak in the N Midlands/ Midlands and the West later in the afternoon as having some of the best chance, but could get a thunder and lightning anywhere really. All dying away early evening as the heating declines.

Second sounding for Galway at 16.00 . Both showing modest LLS and quite light DLS but decent Lapse Rates. Probably going for slight chance again tomorrow, probably something like today getting going in the afternoon, with enough sunny breaks could produce a few decent enough slow moving thunderstorms with heavy local rain.

    Nice convection.

Anyone finding Blitzortung really bad today?

Doesn't seem to be picking up strikes and I usually find it the most accurate and immediate of the lightning maps

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,233 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

I think if you look at in conjunction with the ATD system you get a better overall view of where the thunderstorms are active, neither records all the strikes, just a fraction really at times.

Sferics recorded so far today on the ATD system from the Met Office.

East Galway, partly Blue skies suddenly changed to unreal dark in last hour and been Thunder and lightening for last 30 mins, kinda freaky.

edit: fairly violent thunder and lightening too, weird the way it came all of a sudden

Very heavy thunder in East Galway, a couple of miles from Athenry.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,053 ✭✭✭redsteveireland

Excellent thunderstorm , passed right over my house in Athenry, or there abouts. Clear IC strikes with deep long rumbles. Still going after a bit of a gust front and heavy downpour.
