Frequency range of Irish DTT transmissions

Hey all. I found a lovey tidy Revez TA-7 Digital Aerial with 5G Filter (UHF 470-694 MHz) online for €12. I already have this huge wideband aerial that’s sort of in the way and fairly battered anyway.

Will this suffice for potential expansion of the DTT network? Say if a new mux is launched, am I right in saying it wouldn’t be on 700MHz because that’s now used for mobile, right?

I live close enough to a local relay transmitter so I don’t need anything fancy. Just something that’s future proof.

Yeah, there won't be any TV above 700 MHz. There won't be any more muxes anyway.

Surely if more services launch (HD included) we need more bandwidth/muxes?

There's quite a bit of capacity left and minimal desire from broadcasters. Anyway, there's still spare for a four mux plan easily.

A few years ago the DTT frequencies here were replanned and coordinated with our neighbours, the UK and France.

Six muxes were coordinated at each transmitter site, as per the requirements of the Broadcasting Act, so lots of capacity if required.

This is likely to be reduced further following WRC-23 next year and implemented post 2030.

It's been 10 years since switchover, & what much has changed since then? Give it another 10, & there won't be that many that care about broadcast TV.

Linear TV is dying. They need all that extra bandwidth for people to watch cat videos on 5" screens 🤪

True. However I think the people running the DTT platform and the governing authority who oversee it are partially responsible for the lack of new channels due to the way they have the pricing structure set up etc. Although the launch of VM4 and Sky News indicates that something has potentially changed… let’s hope so. I’m getting sick of the PSB we have in this country. TG4 is the only thing worth watching and it can be fairly bad at times (ie Ros na Rún, think Fair City but somehow worse)

Meow. Linear tv has its uses. I cannot be bothered subscribing to Paramount, Disney, Netflix, Prime etc.

My use case is weird. I’ve an internal iptv setup instead of running coax everywhere. The Wi-Fi is stable enough that I can stream saorview captured by my aerial anywhere within my home. Next step is to add FTA satellite to it. It’s only for 5 people but I’m having fun learning about these things, just if I invest in a device or upgrade it, I want to make sure that it’s future proof. I might just keep my old antenna. It’s working, just very clunky. I’m sure I can find somewhere where I can get a good signal, out of the way and not have some weird harmonics picked up from the mobile cells that are beside me.

If the relay is close by one of these cheap contract aerials to replace the old wideband aerial will do the job and reduce to possibility of any inward mobile base station interference. Depending of the transmitter frequency range a Group A or Group K is recommended.
