    This their a reason one of the branches is growing straight up?

    Yes. The main stem was damaged so the branch is trying to take over and become the main stem.

    You need to bring that branch inwards and train it to take over and remove the top part of the old stem.

    That tree is an oak....and it is going to get to 30-40 m in height not to ention the root soread. Is it a little too close to the wall?

    How do find the old stem and bring this stem inwards?

    I'd tie a cane that is the height of the tree to the current stake. Then I'd find about the middle of that new stem and pull it a little way into the cane. Then over a couple of months pull it in tighter.

    Wake me up when it's all over.
