Will you make a triumphant return next year? Or having been tempted abroad will you be keeping it international?

I actually intentionally pitched the tent in the Rave end of the eco camping, so my snoring wouldn’t bother anyone. Despite the volume, arc lights occasionally illuminating the tent, and no ear plugs, I slept through no bother. Do your worst! 😄

    Hi all,

Long time lurker of the thread but haven't posted much. I wasn't at the picnic this year but I've followed the threads. Can I just say thank you for those that have brought 'Idles' to my attention. I somehow didn't know of them and now I'm even more sickened I wasn't there at the weekend! Their live performance at t hg e music choice awards is incredible if you haven't seen it. 95% of the crowd are bemused as they belted out 'never fight a man with a perm'

So good to here everybody had a great time. We can deny it all we want when it rains, but the sun really does makes these things so much better.

Thanks all, already looking forward to 2024.

Site was locked down but that happens every year for all staff/production movement - it got moving by noon we left at 4:30 and it was busy then!

Some thoughts on 2023. Was an absolutely fantastic few days. I think the festival is what you make of it, definitely almost all positive feedback, maybe there wasn't enough exciting acts available but only complaint still was still feel top tiers booking quality is poor and doesn't rank with international festivals that it used to/standards dropped, the one big thing I'd hope for in the future is that less generic boring irish acts that are passed their prime. Not really sure about the Wolf Tones booking either, I walked near EA at that stage and crowd looked very young and rough and seems out of place in 2023, but maybe that's just me.

But negatives aside, there are so many positives I could go over. I was a bit worried about not finding a decent camping space, last year was a shambles seemed increased capacity and same amount of space, and we arrived even later this year due to work, however we were directed towards an overflow area beside the silver campsite, and it is very nice lots of room, only issue is felt like a bit of a longer walk slightly and no toilets. I also felt there was a little more attention to making the festival more eco this year which is good to see. Security and organisation seemed really well this year, thanks to anyone involved for making it a brilliant weekend for us.

Acts wise, Friday Billie Eilish was fantastic and a real quality headliner show eventhough I wouldn't normally listen to, went to look at Southstar in terminus it was grand, terminus always thought it was a good addition when it was added but feels slightly underutilized sometimes, I'm not a big techno fan either so probably wasted on me. Nia Archives was absolutely excellent, felt different from her Primavera set but still sounded great, really good music.

Saturday started with Pa Sheedy, absolutely excellent, I never got to see Walking on Cars so was fantastic to see him and felt as good as Dermot Kennedy, Hozier, etc at times. A few others we got to see Inhaler were very good Dec Pierce decent too for 90s tunes for a bit, and checked out Simple Kid due to recommendations here and enjoy it too, only knowing one song personally. With all of the talk about De Dannan I actually started listening to Cian Finn again recently, not sure how many know of him but WOW is he absolutely fantastic, threw some songs on in the car on the way up, one of the best talents I've ever seen from this country. I was really hoping he'd pop up at a gig this year, but with nothing announced my hoped faded but felt it might happen since I knew he'd be there with De Dannan. Randomly accidentally stumbled across him at B&S in 2019 and was blown away, think I seen him again somewhere but not since around then. I was enjoying Fred Again, thought he was very good but felt maybe his smaller stage stuff might have been better, but still excellent. It was my 4th time seeing him and about a half hour before Fred ended a notification popped up saying Cian Finn added as a last minute addition starting in 5 mins (but had already started/ missed some of the set due to network) so made a quick but difficult decision to bolt from the front of Fred Again to Croi and absolutely was the right choice, an amazing gig and pity it was such a small crowd probably only 50 or 100 people. Went to a few Croi acts Moving still, Post Punk Podge, some DNB act and Naive Ted plus plenty others all great, feel like as said above Croi area much improved and feels like it has its own identity now, the guys booking really know what their doing although still feel B&S's touch is missed.

Sunday started with Fight Like Apes, live wise really not my type of music unfortunately which is a pity, I think they have something but sorta wish they'd listen to themselves back, but yeah left after a few songs. Went to De Dannan again not my usual style of music but great to see knowing how legendary they are. Rick Ashley was fun for sure. Checked out Hannah Laing was decent in Terminus. Went back to the tent for a few cans with not much planned for the evening and said we'd hit Freetown and Trenchtown. Both much improved with Freetown having all these nooky roomes, really cool and gets better late on. Massively enjoyed Trenchtown, what an improvement over before, sorta just felt meh to me whenever I went but went to the Revelation Sound stage and it was amazing, an amazing Dub DJ there for about 2 hours and left eventually for Jamie XX who was very good and the Killers who I didn't find too remarkable personally but can see why a lot enjoyed. And then at the end, we checked out Mother and Survivor Stage and both great fun, really like the design of that new stage with the aircraft's and everything it's great.

Food wise the one thing I'll say is prices seemed absolutely mental. Like one vendor I went to pre COVID was 12 EUR for a meal, 16 last year and 19 this year for the same thing, the other went from 12 last year to 15 eur, for a burger and fries, even worse for pizza! Seemed really difficult to find anywhere of value unless outside the main arena slightly, I know prices are always mad at festivals but just seemed beyond normal and way beyond inflation levels, like I'd get a meal at a fancy restaurant in Limerick for some prices. Pints were nice, 7.50 a bit mad for a Heineken but thought Lagunitas was lovely and 7.90 for 6.2% isn't actually terrible value, considering classed as a premium beer and is now 7eur plus in most pubs for the 5.5% Irish watered down version.

I definitely think I'll go back, not 100% sure about next year might depend on bookings, I usually got 3+ entry early bird. As for this super special act, I'm not even going to get excited out of fear it's Picture This or someone, have lost faith lately and am still worried about direction things are going in but definitely a lot of positives signs for the weekend. Thought it would be my last but at some point for sure will be back, all of the improvements of the smaller stages really have swung it for me, Trenchtown's revelation sound system stage as I mentioned was a huge bonus, not sure if it was there previously but whenever I visited it previously most stages just had a big of grand reggae that you'd enjoy for a small bit, but this year better stages and all of the acts great. I ended the festival there, enjoyed some amazing heavy Dub and Jungle I never seen so many people having so much fun, looked around during the final set and one fella hanging upside down off of a tree and a pilon of 8 people at the other side of the stage, and another bunch of people worshiping a flag of Japan for some reason along all sorts of bizarre stuff listening to huge dub tunes, people went crazy during 2 Flowdan tunes that came one at one point before the final DJ came on. Then to top it off, Radikal Guru brought out Cian Finn as a surprise for the last hour or so of the set to close it out, couldn't have finished any better it was absolutely unreal stuff and surprisingly one of my favorite festivals I've been to out of the probably 30 or so I've been to.

On a practical note ref the Wolfe Tones being in the EA, I mean there wasn’t exactly competition or alternatives for the masses! This was Sunday and prime time, Rankins wood empty, nothing on the MainStage until Gavin James (Most will have seen live at least once) so no surprise!

Fully agree, was doing all in my power not to be near the wolfe tones as not for me at all and found very little on. Ended up at deadlians at Salty who were grand but had not made my long short list of acts happy to see but were on and no chance of accidently hearing the Wolfe Tones

Question, what time do people usually leave their campsites? I was packed up and in the car by 8:50 this morning, started taking down tent at about 07:30.

Was normally on the road by 9, not by choice and certainly not driving, left the campervan park at about 12 today, with a ball of sleep and a full belly.

  • Registered Users Posts: 241 ✭✭Hank the DJ

So I still wouldn't get in, sound, you just made a grown man cry, and it's nothing to do with the fear.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,657 ✭✭✭Seathrun66

Was on the road at 11.15 last night. Busy day today and missing The Killers no big deal for me. I’d have enjoyed Amyl but not essential, I’d seen so much good stuff up til then that my thirst was sated. Finishing with Rick Astley on the Salty Dog meant walking up through Red Car Park with a huge grin on my face. More later but I think that was the most fun Picnic in a decade.

Who knows, Genghis? I had an unbelievable weekend but it's all to play for next year. A bit of a return to form for EP, it sounds like, so I'm not closing any doors.

  • Registered Users Posts: 558 ✭✭✭deeks

Sounds like a great weekend was had by all. Glad to hear it. May even consider returning next year ☺️

Can I just ask - did it feel overcrowded at any stage in around the main arena or going between the smaller stages etc, especially considering that the capacity is increasing by another 5k next year?

If you have an issue with crowds then you don't want to be in front of the barrier in front of the sound desk, was in there for Fred Again at the start and I did not like it one little bit, found it very difficult to get out of there and I am not a small person without the ability to push through if needed.

Stayed a bit further back for Killers and it was no issue at all, had clear view of stage and able to move freely.

how much Sunday tickets are released? I sold my 2 weekend tickets this year but was looking to swop for a Sunday as good few acts stacked on that day. They're not for sale for 2024 yet anyway

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,330 ✭✭✭niallon

Personally I’ve been really feeling the extra numbers have a negative effect the last two years. We’d already decided that we were gonna take a break from EP the next few years anyway but The Killers on the Sunday really decided it for us further. Between day tickets and more campers making their way in to make the most of the last day it was way too full even further back towards the ferris wheel

    my tuppence

    Friday:

Highlight was Viagra Boys, was really looking forward to see them and boy did they deliver! some energy in that little tent

Managed to catch the last 10 mins of Young Fathers who were also great

Honourable mentions to Murder Capital - better than I expected. Finished off the night at Silent Disco which is always fun

    Saturday:

Fred Again for me was the pick of Saturday, maybe the whole weekend. He creates such a feeling of joy with that beaming smile and great music, and his music/performance was top notch.

Closely followed by Johnny Marr - just brilliant! an actual rock God

I also thought Paulo was great - but then I've listened to his new album a lot. I see loads of people giving out about him, maybe they haven't...

The Last Dinner Party....the hype is real folks, don't care if they are 'industry plants', their set was short but fantastic, they will be big stars. The reception they got from the crowd was amazing and I think they were genuinely blown away by it, which was great to see

Honourable mention to Nell Mescal, dragged along by the missus against my wishes - she was great!

    Sunday

CONFIDENCE MAN! - fun, fun, fun - an absolute belter of a set! the close out with 'Holiday' was the best 5 mins fun all weekend by a country mile

Lighting Seeds - just the perfect set at the perfect time, lovely afternoon vibes (and thankfully they didn't ruin it by singing that daft english soccer tune ;))

Really enjoyed Royel Otis too, young aussie surf rockers

Closed out the night with Overmono and JamieXX, both great, Overmono just edged it for me but Jamie was great too. Love the way he places tiny snippets of the older 'In Colour' stuff into the new stuff

Honourable mentions to Milk. and Samia, both decent

Overall, once again a fantastic weekend of diverse sounds. Yes the beer and food is expensive and the pi$$mud is terrible but all the great stuff massively out weighs all that! As one of my friends said, it's just such an escape from life for 3 days...

Great weekend overall and I'll leave the more detailed music reviews to those that are better versed and knowledgable on the subject than I.

Points of note: sitting on the bench at the back of he Croi stage looking at Scullion in glorious dappled sunshine on a sunny Sunday Spetempber Sunday afternoon I couldn't help but think: "Where better to be than a field in Stradbally?" The music and vibe were great.

Really enjoyed the Survivor stage although I think A whole ot of zep seemed a bit all over the place. Great when playing but just a bit hap hazard between songs. Oveall though a great addition to EP. Wet leg were superb, Enjoyed Scatterd ashes, Mary Wallpopers and Basht were very good. RSAG did a super set as usual but only caught last 20 mins. Too many more to mention. Really enjoyed Scustin and so many others but highlight was Liam O'Maonlai in Our Lady of the Consumption around 23:30 on Saturday night. Magic! I also watched him on Croi on Sunday and I wish I had half the talent he has in his little toe. Is there anything he can't sing or play?? That Nina Somone song was somenthing else.

Things not so great. I emjoyed the Mary Wallopers and was on the way to the Wolfe Tones but bailed out. I thought it was way too dangerous amd had the potential to be a crush issue. Had something happened there was no way in our out of that tent. I also thought the vibe from one to the other wasn't very pleasant and I didn't want to be involved in that. I think the scheule would have been better had the Wolfe Tones been on the main stage at the same time as the Mary Wallopers would have made since and split the crowd. There was also a lot of sound bleed from some stages. Late night also seemd to get very techno in a lot more places that previous years or maybe I'm just getting too old??

I thought the food was very poor, can't comment on Kinara but amytime I went by the line was mental so I skipped it. Anything else I had was pretty rubbish and I also heard poor reports from people in our group that hit up Saba and Camile which I would have thought should have been decent. Fair play to mucker and darzogs assistance on their clashfinder as the EP app was crap. I have to say that really annoyed me as I like to know whats on so that if I dodn't find something interesting wandering around I have a plan B or C and that was a struggle this year.

I felt the increase in numbers really put a strain on the toilets. I saw many urinals that were overflowing and then people just using any random fence etc, no clue on what the portaloos were like. If FR increase capacity they really should have approriate sanitation facilities to cater for the numbers and I don't think they did. I also think they should add a little bit of lighting as you move fromm EA past RW and on up to Trailer Park as it was very dark at night.

We arrived Thursday but all traffic was beiong sent into Red for some reason. Every other year its been green and thats ideal for Pink Moon so not sure what that logic was. Thursday night was good fun with the Survivor stage. Friday morning was a bit of a mess. We left Pink Moon via the woods path to catch some sets in Trailer Park from 12:30. Got stopped around Paintball as Arena wasn't open due to Health and Safety checks and awaiting sign off. Kept getting told 15 mins and around 13:30 we said F it and went back to Pink Moon to chill. There were still teleprorters in use at 3pm around RW and EA and I don't think the Pink Moon entrance to the Arena opened until 16:00 or later due to H&S site sign off. So I missed stuff in Croi also. I think that was very poor form. No issue with H&S but there was no reason for heavy lifting kit to be in use on Friday when gigs were on. There wasn't particularly bad weather during the build up so they should have all been finished on Thursday IMO.

TLDR: Overall a super weekend and had a great time. I definitley noticed the increase in numbers just walking around so another 5k next year will ratchet things up again. Music - brilliant. Weather - brilliant. Food - poor. EP App for lineup and times - beyond rubbish.

Already have my loyalty tickets for next year so barring some complete disaster I'll be there.

How much were pints at the festival? I'm seeing people saying it was fair for a festival, but I can't imagine prices were any different from ATN or any of the Malahide/St Annes/Marlay Park etc shows.

For the people still speculating on moving the dates for a headliner next year... THEY MOVED IT TO NOT CLASH WITH COLDPLAY!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,444 ✭✭✭The Davestator

Pints were €7.50 and cans from the smaller bars with no draft were a scandalous €6.50

Done many picnics, definitely noticed the crowd, a couple of pinch points especially around all entrance/exit to main stage and at night to/from campsites. Toilets in the arena suffered from that.

Crowds in the main arena were fine once in there I thought. Billie actually had quite a smaller crowd than expected but was brilliant.

Murder Capital, Billie, Idles, Sawdoctors, Confidence Man, Spike Island, Marr, were highlights for me.

Biggest disappointment was Hot House Flowers, far too mellow for 9.30 at night.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,444 ✭✭✭The Davestator

The lack of queueing was much better than previous years and security were much more lax too. I didn't queue once coming in our out any entrance all weekend.

Nutini seems to have been widely accepted as being beyond terrible by most. Was looking forward to him but he didn't understand the assignment as a late replacement.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,014 ✭✭✭boomdocker

My missus and a few friends went to HHF, they were beyond disappointed, said they were truly awful, mostly down to O Maonlaoi

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,792 ✭✭✭Fanirish

They didn’t move it cause of Coldplay. Melvin Benn very clear in interview that 2024 was moved to accommodate a headline act schedule

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭traco

I could understand that, definitely wasn't a performance of their hits. He was doing what he wanted to do and ventured in other genres in a big way. I was at the back and a number of people left. I went thinking it would be some of the classics but I'll listen to anything and really enjoyed it the longer it went on. Fiachna showed off his tin whistle skills also.

Pints of Heineken were €7.50 up from €7.00 last year, Moretti was the same as last year at €7.90.

330ml cans of Moretti were €5 and 500ml cans of Heineken were €6.
