Sneaking cans into the Salty Dog the height of sybaritic release in 2023. You read it here first.

Spent last weekend at a festival in Slovakia (Pohoda), again a victim of poorer lineups in 2023. They used to have headliners of the calibre of Kraftwerk, MIA, Bad Seeds, Pumpkins, etc but this year it was Jamie XX, Wet Leg & Central Cee. As artists command higher fees a festival that charges only €109 a ticket (early bird, rose to €139) can’t match west European events.

    Some EP feedback:

Jamie XX - decent beats but it didn’t sound very innovative to me. Loved his debut album but he barely used vocalists here. Passed the time but once is enough.

Central Cee - caught the second half of his set (reputedly the highest paid act of the weekend). 30 mins was more than enough. His flow was great and the beats decent enough but the lyrics were pretty one-dimensional and dumb. Got a great reaction though snd he’ll be huge at EP.

Viagra Boys - a far better band than when I last saw them four years ago. Tighter and more entertaining. Not a fan of the Monkey song (?) nor the bewilderingly popular Sports but they were excellent. They finished with Research Chemicals which was stunning, best thing I heard all weekend (Sleafords, Yard Act, Mulatu Astatke & Dry Cleaning also great).

And @Stillill42 Arooj Aftab was very good, nice voice and worth a look at EOTR, though very low key. I expect that’s much of that weekend anyway. Still jealous of Wilco.

It's ok lads i'll pull up the slack on this front. Do my bit for the community.

On the age question, i've often wondered what the f*ck were people up to in their teens/twenties that they weren't going to festivals?

Big on the all mouth and trousers scene

Can't believe they've booked Dyson as the festival hairdryer partner. Totally aimed at the 18-24 demographic. Remember the good old days when we used to have Remington? Electrolux? Proper hairdryers. Bet ATN will have a cooler hairdryer partner.

I was just looking at Feile pics from 1991/92 over the weekend.

"Facilities" were a lot more basic 😂,

Twas far from Dyson hairdryers etc etc........

Also did I miss Central Cee being announced somewhere ? - daughter loves him and might have to bring her , at 15 she might be an old 12 😅 , would I have to register as bringing her , or just rock up with her on the day does anyone know ?

Hoping some more acts that I might like are added as we get closer but I like a good few in there, Idles Murder Capital Mary Wallopers , Fights like Apes are my preferred kind of acts from the lineup , with some visits to dancier areas as the smuggled cans go down

Going to Forest Fest Friday night, mainly just to see James - its been too long ..

I'm involved in a show every year at the picnic, and this year we're looking for a few extra actors/performers/dancers. It's unpaid gig but obviously tickets and preferential camping come with it, and you have plenty of time off to enjoy the festival as you please. PM me for more info if anybody is interested. Cheers

Had it in my head that The Charlatans were in Belfast with the boy Marr over EP weekend but he's with The Killers.

I agree, they haven't even put the volunteer tab onto website yet with six weeks to go, last year they had the volunteer tab up on May 18th so they're a bit scatty this year.

I've seen people in this thread dancing. I'd source my talent elsewhere.

Don't get me wrong, rubick. The unveiling of yourself, Seath, Mucker, Kepler, Darzog, Thundercats et al as Jerry's new burlesque crew, unicycling around in drag in between acts juggling balls of fire....? I mean that's the kick up the arse the Picnic needs right there. I'd be back in like a shot.

See you there then stillill42 you have uncovered the blurred out act

My mistake. I was assuming Central Cee from his support slot to the Killers at Reading & Leeds. I think there’s a fair chance of him appearing but it’s far from confirmed.

No kids between 13-17 allowed. Over 18 or u-12. You could take a chance (pals have successfully with 13 year olds) but you run the risk of being denied entry. From what I’ve read (anecdotally) security are a bit slack on that but it’s unreliable info and probably not worth risking your entire Friday on. If denied entry you’d have to take your daughter home then return to the site.

I would say Central Cee odd is on to play given that info and would fit the bill of mediocre Tik Tok trend acts. I seen him this year at a European festival and I can say he is possibly one of the worst UK Hip Hop acts I've ever seen, but agree beats and (one dimensional) flow were decent. Overall Boring, reusing trendy lyrics and beats from old grime&pop tracks, every song sounds the same, only lasted a few minutes at it. I actually enjoy some of that style of music and thought the likes of Skepta, Dave, Kano, Headie, Stormzy were all somewhere between very decent and excellent when I seen them live, would take any of those over him any day.

He won’t be playing EP he headlined forbidden fruit as exclusive festival show here

I see The wedding Present are playing in Dolans in Limerick September 10th, would be a nice heritage act for EP too.

I haven't had a lot to add to the conversation for a while, but I've been checking in every now and then.

But here is something to think about....

If you look at the planning document, while they are no layouts of the entire site, there is a partial one where they are talking about campervan traffic. And on that layout there is no BYE ECO camp in the woods. It is shown on similar parts of previous planning documents.

So? New home for '23? Or just an oversight?

On a slightly related note, we have made a decision to pass on ATN and put all of our eggs in EP's basket.

Fingers crossed that is the right decision. 🤞

Caught them at a Primavera last month without being familiar with them - Delightful stuff! One of my highlights.

Had no idea they were playing Limerick, cheers for that!
