Should I go to a hen and wedding?

So I was invited to a hen and wedding by a woman who I was friends with years ago since school but we haven't spoken properly in years. To be honest I was surprised I was invited. I'm wondering if it was a genuine invite or just to bump up numbers. I'm kind of wondering if I should go or not. Like it could be a day out but I don't like the idea of wasting that kind of money (I'm far from rich) on someone who seems like an acquaintance at best.

Go to the hen but maybe skip the wedding. Weddings are great, and that, but they are a bigger financial hit and must less craic.

i went to a stag of an old school friend a few years back. Similar to yourself we had fallen out of touch but it was nice to get the invite so I went. Big mistake. I didn’t know a soul at the thing apart from him so felt very out of the loop. I also realised we’d grown apart for a reason. I ended up leaving early but lesson learnt. So I wouldn’t go but that’s just me.

I hugely agree with this post. Going to a hen would look great on her cv.

cynical me thinks its to boost the numbers.

it could also be that that person doesn't have very many friends (so to boost the numbers but for a different reason). or they want to reconnect with you after X years (we've all let friendships slide due to life and laziness)

it depends how close you were as friends back in the day.

Interesting idea about reconnecting. Sounds odd being invited to both hen and wedding though.

I presume the fiancée is really old as well, so why bother if you don't want them there?

to the OP, if you are happy to leave that friendship in the past, dont go.

if you would like to potentially reconnect with an old friend, then go.

if 2 is an option, i would go to the hen. if thats terrible; a death close to the family, or covid, or something means you cant go to the wedding, and thats fine as well.

My sensible advice on this subject is to get the bride locked on the hen night, take copious amount of photos(preferably when there's a line of dicks ready) and then comfort her a week later on the day of the wedding, saying there, there. I'll find out who did it.

Go to the hen but stress that unfortunately you won't be able to attend the wedding due to prior commitments. If you get on well at the hen you can keep in contact, if you realise you're a rent-a-friend you can cut contact again.

If money is tight for you, don’t put yourself under pressure for that hen/ wedding. If you haven’t seen her in years before the wedding, you’ll not see her for years after neither. I’d politely decline.
