I don't even think they are - but they'd be much better served by playing a midfielder in midfield, a left back at left back, and telling their left-wing-forward to stay there instead of wandering all over the pitch.

They also need to park the egos a bit… too many of them are 'main man' types, and slow things down trying to do it all themselves instead of playing quick ball to lads in better positions. Think they'd nearly be a better team if they were told to play 2 touch, like in training.

Actually feel sorry for TAA he's been asked to play out of position in a role he doesn't know how to play.

Whenever Trent plays in midfield for Liverpool, he is taking the ball off of the goalkeeper and is starting the attacks. His biggest weapon is his big booming accurate 60 yard passes to the feet wingers who are running in behind. He can create an attack in an instant.

England have defended who are either hoofing it or taking too long in the ball. Saka is not running in behind, instead he wants to cut inside onto his left foot, and had a poor end of the season in front of goal. Think he got 1 goal in 10 or something like that. Foden finished the season much stronger in front of goal but has been shifted out to left wing role but is coming inside to congest the central areas at the same time that a right footed ageing left back is cutting back inside too, further congesting the middle. It makes no sense.

Kane dropping into midfield on top of all of this, and Jude is running around there too trying to get on the end of things rather than dictate. Gallagher is another player now who will run around midfield but doesn't exactly give you calmness or passing on the ball. He just wants to get on the end of knock downs and pull backs.

Southgate clearly doesn't want England to have the ball. A few players are better off packing up and going home with this set up.

    Rice has been terrible. Again.

Much to McClean's enjoyment I'd expect

Yeah it's not his fault, it's all on the manager.

Eze and Watkins coming on, could be a huge change.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,037 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Their midfielders seem to be told to just stay as an extra pair of CBs in front of the first set, rather than actually being allowed to take hold of the game. Gallagher seems to have a little more license to chase around a bit at least.

Now taking the whole front 3 off… hmmm… I like the three lads coming on, but that's a lot of disruption at once. Think Eze and Watkins fit better around Jude though.

this is the worst I’ve ever seen Bellingham play.

He’s a shadow of the player we saw for Real Madrid this year

Square peg in a round hole. He as he played a dozen games in midfield in tge EPL? Crazy selection.

Panic stations now, Kane, Saka and Foden off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,532 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

lol he took kane off. He must have been told what BBC were saying at HT

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,716 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

Who'd have thought a striker making a run would open things up ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,265 ✭✭✭✭y0ssar1an22

well he was crap for the last 5 champions league games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,794 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

It makes no sense why they would play him there at all. Inverting inside from the full back position like at Liverpool is a completely different game than actually playing as a total No.6 in the double pivot! If Klopp, who managed him week in week out for 7 years didn't fancy him as a stand alone deep lying midfielder, what the hell makes Southgate think that he knows better??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,716 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

Ref didn't give that foul. Bit lucky there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,093 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

He plays the inverted role sound. Liverpool changed for the better in 22-33 when he was moved in there, and he was one of the players of the season in 23-24 before missing a large chunk with injury. He was the only one of the Liverpool injured players to return and put in strong performances at the end of the season.

He looked lost because when have the ball, everyone he should be passing to are standing 5-10 yards away from him. Rice wants to do the same thing and is pulling rank which is fair. When England don't have the ball, he should be fine with just sitting back in alongside Rice. It's when 2v1 situations arise he gets caught out. Teams really target this but 2v1s will catch anyone out. The thing is Rice can't create enough himself but is positioning himself in the positions that Trent wants to be in.

Southgate bringing players on who will actually run in behind (Watkins & Bowen) while bringing your best passer off (Trent) makes no sense whatsoever.

It's funny seeing people slate Trent's defensive nous in midfield but then advocate Mainoo & Gallagher coming in instead. Mainoo is shocking defensively with letting lads run off of him consistently and Gallagher is a glorified runner and harrier. Granted, they can come on as the 2nd/3rd midfielder when shoring up the team to protect a lead but not when chasing a goal in a tight game with nothing being created IMO.

Ireland are an example of even with a good manager its no use if you've bad players. With England it's not use having good players if you've a bad manager.

It is funny to listen to the panic in his voice though. Everything has an edginess about it. Completely different to how he played.

After all the talk of modern tactics and phrases etc. England's sole tactic is throw on the fast lad and let him run "in b-hi-end".

That was a great chance for the Danish number 18, took way too long and he was blocked. The resulting corner was another excellent chance, unmarked in the centre and the Danish player put it over the bar from 6 yards out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,716 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

That is absolute poison from England. What a waste. Can't even get hoofball right.

England have been dreadful. Denmark deserve to get a winner.

Ben Foster in the ground there ?

Southgate showing how stupid he is in this one.

Like there's a clear gap between the midfield and the forwards and that's been going on for most of the half. So he changes the forwards when it was clear the defense was the problem. Guehi and Trippier have been very poor and as a result the midfielders are afraid to push forward and leave them exposed at the back.

They've made a mess of it, it's Southgate that's the problem.

You wouldn't want to be eating listening to Shearer you would choke laughing.

Shearer - (sounding as if he has given up)

"We expected an improved performance from England….it's been worse".

Put you right off your dinner that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,914 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Amazing how poor they are given the level of talent they have. But they at least look like they will qualify from group. I think Southgate is more suited to the knockout football. Grind out a result etc. England's version of Italy.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

1-1 FT. england really disappointing for all the talent they have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,500 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Means England can't rest loads of players in the last group game. England looked knackered.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,179 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

If anyone deserved to win that game it was Denmark. England were very poor, so much for one of the favourites.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,978 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

What is wrong with that comment? It's the truth.

Imagine being Bellingham or Foden, winnings Champions Leagues and Premier Leagues with Real Madrid and Man City a couple of weeks ago and you show up to Germany and Gareth Southgate is telling you to keep it tight and sit back against Denmark.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,265 ✭✭✭✭y0ssar1an22

trippier at left back really not working. should have brought alfie doughty at this rate. or someone who can actually overlap on the left given foden just wants to come inside.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,500 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Hope Denmark go through after that. England will go through but I wouldn't fancy them to beat Germany if England have to play them in the next round.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,048 ✭✭✭Unearthly

Usual story with England. Look great on paper but useless on the pitch. Last 16 or QF at best for them

cant buy that they are anymore knackered than anyone else. dont let them off so easily.

  • Should be in the end of Trent in midfield. Useless. I see they got booed at the final whistle. Silly fans.

Will probably get 7 points but will be found out against the better teams.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,500 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Oh I'm not making excuses for them, but they looked tired which is a very bad sign for them.

Is James McClean the most pointless pundit ever ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,037 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Tyrick Mitchell has had a great season at left back for Palace, and since they're playing his defensive partner Guéhi at the back anyway, would've made a lot of sense to play the pair of them together.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,507 ✭✭✭✭castletownman

Livramento would have been a shout too, and covers both sides.

  • No no. Luke Shaw must go even though he's injured and last played in November...

I mean it’s not surprising England being this poor, Southgate should’ve been sacked years ago. That said, it’s still something that England now have looked the worse out of any of Southgate’s 4 tournaments. Fact is Southgate is every bit as bad as he was in 2018, and has no idea how to make decisions, from who to drop and when/how to make subs. With a half decent manager they’d be playing good football but they have a caveman in charge.
