Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Mad how none of the Turkish players seem to have 'been to Turkiye' for the auld cosmetic job.

Very enjoyable game. Would rather see Austria and Turkey progress at the expense of the likes of England, France, or Portugal based on entertainment value.

Ridiculous there's only 4 mins of added time

What a brilliant save by the Turkish keeper. Last minute of the knockouts to win the game.

I feel sorry for Austria. Tough. They played well enough, entertaining game. That horrible early goal they conceded, and that amazing save at the end by the Turkish keeper to deny them the equalizer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,259 ✭✭✭✭y0ssar1an22

thats some save at the end to win it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,935 ✭✭✭kksaints

That was a miracle save by the keeper. Austria paid the price for a lackadaisical first half somewhat but they went out with honour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,656 ✭✭✭DJIMI TRARORE

Probably the best game of the championship, and an almost Banks like save, after the Austrian forward met the cross with a textbook downward header

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,500 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

Finally a genuinely excellent match. Tournament had been lacking so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

    I'm hating the refs.

Austrian keeper goes up and is told he can't stand by the other keeper. Where is that rule?

Baumgartner must have headed 4 shots in the last 10 minutes there. Another "home" game vs the Netherlands could be a cracker. Got both games wrong today 😕

    Its England's to lose !!!!

That was loadsa fun, especially that second half. It was a shame one of them had to go out.

Baris especially needs to thank Mert for that save. He had two decent chances towards the end that he messed up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,179 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Mert has hurt Austria with that save.

    great game of football.

I really feel for Austria, they were great.

That save at the end is one of the best saves I’ve ever seen.

I would say that Depay, Gakpo and Dumfries, etc. might fancy they would harvest more than one goal from this

Looking forward to this one and Spain v Germany.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,090 ✭✭✭trashcan

such a pity Spain/Germany is only a quarter final. Would be a worthy final. Instead, we’ll quite possibly have England stinking the place out in the final against one or the other. Could see them posing their way past Switzerland, and probably the Dutch in the semis. Hopefully won’t come to that. Hoping for a Spanish win.

So now that the round of 16 is done and the quarter finals are set, what are people’s opinions on the tournament itself? I’m not overly entertained by it, the first few days were great. We had loads of goals, officiating seemed to be competent and consistent. But I think round 2 and 3 of the groups along with some of the last 16 matches were poor, with some bizarre / infuriating referring decisions. I think the biggest let down is that no team or individual player has stood up and grab the competition by the throat. There’s nobody that I’m dying to see in action again.

Yesterday was strangely enough the best day of the last 16 game days. The Dutch looked very good finally and Gakpo looks like he's really at it for them. And, Turkey Austria was a cracker, I'm actually sorry Austria are out as their games have been by far the most entertaining as a whole.

I think it's been a very enjoyable tournament, any games between 2 of the "lesser" teams have been fantastically entertaining and competitive. Only downfall of the tournament so far is that none of the biggest teams have been particularly impressive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,050 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

    Good summary.

Initially very entertaining. Everyone seemed to be going for it. But soon settled down into cagey games by the final group games.

Little to no jeopardy didn't help. One victory got you through the groups.

Knockouts reverted to type. Tactical battles, dour for most of them. Coaches on both sides often happy to be drawing at half time, so they could play a 45min game to progress. Some even played a 30min game, waiting to 60min to change anything. The coaches seem to be breaking games into segments now. Up to half time. Up to 60min, up to 75, then try to win. Very few coaches go against the grain.

Only a couple of the knockout games were entertaining overall. And it'll probably get less now in the quarters as the fear kicks in. I'd still expect the Spain Germany game to entertain, as these teams can play negatively. Not in their dna. But not expecting much from the other quarters.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,153 ✭✭✭DellyBelly

Yeah feel sorry for Austria. I really like the way they play but what a save by the Keeper at the end. Gakpo looks a total different player then what we see in th PL….if he continues in that vein then the dutch have a chance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,526 ✭✭✭glenjamin

It's been quite an underwhelming tournament in my opinion. Too many negative teams and/or lack of quality. Never been a fan of 24 team competitions with some teams advancing by finishing third. Allows too many weak teams who set up by parking the bus in the hope of nicking of solidary win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,516 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

I've enjoyed all the knockouts. Bar France v Belgium which I think is the only game that fits 'the dour knockouts' description above.

Every other game had something. Portugal Slovenia was as interesting a 0-0 as you could get. Seeing Italy taken apart by Switzerland was surprising. England's troubles were great entertainment with a bad twist at the end obviously. Georgia leading Spain was fun while it lasted. Denmark stuck with Germany for a long while, Netherlands looked good in the most one-sided tie, and Austria Turkey a cracker.

Not sure what people want or how they think it compares to other sets of knockout ties in previous tournaments. Like for every cracking knockout tie you remember there was almost certainly a few dismal L16/L8 struggles which your mind has blanked.
