Passport application & none matching names on birth cert

Trying to help an elderly family friend who has applied for a British passport (they are eligible due to being born in Ireland before 1948). Their application has hit a snag due to the easy at which name changes happened at the time (Mary became known as Margret etc). Both their parents birth certs don't match the name on their own birth cert nor the names on the death cert.

They have mentioned they "may" have some affidavit for their father stating the name change but that may be lost to time.

What other avenues could be explored to correct the mapping for all these different names?

Someone in their 80s applying for a British passport when they already have an Irish one is really just looking for something to do, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

If he insists on pursuing this then he should write to the British embassy and ask them if a sworn affidavit from himself regarding the spelling anomalies will do.
