Bangladesh screwed over a bit there?

Chasing a decent Indian target but ahead by 17 on DLS when heavy rain stopped play.

Overs lost and obviously the target reduced (but perfectly fairly as per DLS). However, the conditions were pretty poor in the second part of their innings and they came up 5 short including run-outs when slipping between the wickets.

You'd wonder whether the urgency to resume play would have been there if they'd been trailing on DLS.

No conspiracy (umpires are above approach, DLS is fair etc) but there's surely a sub-conscious bias at play?

didn’t get to see any of it but it does seem bollôcks that umpires are keeping players out on the field playing after or during rain with conditions such that the players can’t keep their feet when attempting to complete a run…

2.7.4 If the umpires consider the ground is so wet or slippery as to deprive the bowler of a reasonable foothold, the fielders of the power of free movement, or the batter of the ability to play their strokes or to run between the wickets, then these conditions shall be regarded as so bad that it would be dangerous and unreasonable for play to take place…

    dangerous and unreasonable… ?

either way I’ve no faith in the international umpires these days… most of them are as useful as a wheelchair with pedals.

So what's the overall verdict on our tournament? Did well to qualify for last 12. A slightly fortuitous result against England. Pity the Afg match was rained off as had a reasonable chance there of a result. After that - not enough consistency and depth I suppose.

Keeping half an eye on Afg v Aus this morning. At one stage, looked like Afg could take advantage of Aussie ambition and pull off a win, which would put us to the bottom of table. But doesn't look likely now.

Overall a successful tournament. Qualifying for the super 12s was the main goal and they achieved that. They had a great result against England but were disappointing against Sri Lanka. They were competitive if not overly threatening against NZ and Australia, but considering the T20 form in the last 3/4 years, that's a big improvement. The key now is too build from this. Things would have looked a lot different if Scotland hadn't let them off the hook in the second game. So there's plenty left to improve on. T

The two openers did OK. Stirling was a bit of a disappointment, mainly because he threatened a couple of times before getting out to stupid shots. Balbirnie probably had a better tournament than I expected from him. I thought his captaincy was better two, although he is still a bit rigid at times. Tucker had a super tournament, he looks to have given us a really solid no 3 for years to come. The middle order is still a huge issue. Tector had a shocker, he has the talent but I wonder does it translate to T20? Is he more suited to ODI and test cricket, where he has time to play himself in. Bar the Scotland game Campher didn't offer much with the bat. I don't think he's a no 5 in international cricket. A consistent no 4/5, that had the ability to accelerate in the closing overs would transform this team IMO.

Overall the bowlers did well. Josh Little came of age, I think he could make the team of the tournament, was there a better left armer? Delaney did really well. The coaches wasted 2 years trying to turn him into a no 3, when it actually his bowling that looks stronger. There should be big investment in his bowling now. Leggies are match winners. I thought McCarthy did well, he picked up wickets and was a lot more economical than he has been in the past. Adair was the bowling disappointment, especially in the death overs. He bowls too many wides and too many length deliveries. Never really looked a wicket threat. Like Tector I wonder is he better suited to the longer forms. They need to get pace into this side. David Delaney should be given a go over the summer. He may not be Mark Wood quick, but he's 5/6 MPH quicker than what we have. He can also hit some big shots down the order.

Afghanistan did England a big favour today keeping it very close v the Aussies. If England can beat Sri Lanka they're through.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Qualified for the super 12s and then beat England, you have to consider that a success.

Sri lanka have really fallen off a cliff in the second innings. England through by the looks of it.

After South Africa choked against Netherlands on Sunday, it actually looks like it worked out really well for Ireland.

The next T20 World Cup in the West Indies and America in 2024 will have an expansion of finalists from the current 16 to 20. The ICC have previously used a global qualifier tournament but that now will be shelved ahead of the next one and instead regional qualifiers will be used. Europe will have two qualifying spaces.

Since the Netherlands won and qualified automatically for the next tournament that means that they won't be in the European Qualifier and so instead of having Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands fighting for two spots that means that qualifying should be routine for us with the likes of Germany, Jersey and Italy our obstacles.

Also looks like that first round groups of the next tournament will be abolished with the tournament having 4 groups of 5 teams from the off.

So the two semi-finals will be on Wednesday and Thursday.

It's New Zealand versus Pakistan on Wednesday morning from 8am and England versus India on Thursday morning from 8am. What's the chances of a rematch between Pakistan and India once again at the MCG?

    Think England will beat India.

New Zealand vs Pakistan will be too hard to call… just fancy Pakistan, slightly.

Gun to my head I think England have enough to win the tournament.

Disappointing carry on from the Sri Lanka camp.

Multiple allegations of sexual assaults…four counts of alleged sexual intercourse without consent against Danushka Gunathilaka. Arrested, jailed and denied bail twice… likely be the new year before release im reading.

Casino fight… the fûck were players doing in a casino literally days before a World Cup ? Eyes of the media, hello, can they be that naive ? But to be getting into physical altercations whilst there ?!

Pakistan comfortable winners this morning after a terrific bowling display left New Zealand you felt about 20 runs short but Azam and Rizwan got away and it was pretty straight forward after that.

Doesn't look like it's ever going to happen for this New Zealand side in ICC events. They've come so close on numerous occasions but just can't get over the line but at least this group of players did win the Test Championship event.

Pakistan like always seem to come on like a train and it should be a good final whatever happens.

Looking like a very humiliating defeat for India.

Wow, that is some demolition job from England on India. They couldn't take Josh Little apart quite the same way 😄

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,472 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

    India just annihilated.

Back end of the Indian batting innings England let a good start slip with very poor bowling and India probably accumulated 20 or so runs more then they should have and I was wondering if that might come back to haunt them. But obvious not 😅

going to be an interesting and entertaining final. English favourites though.

An amazing performance from Buttler and Hales yesterday. You'd have to think 220-230 would have been on if they could have completed their 20 overs and to think that had Rashid at number 11, a pretty decent batsmen in his own right, shows the power of their batting.

We had the Pakistan-England series before this World Cup and it's not an easy call to make for favourites. Pakistan have a fastest bowling attack in the World with Shaheen Afridi as good as any for an opening bowler. You feel Pakistan's weakness is in their batting. They have been heavily reliant on Babar Azam and Mohammed Rizwan but apart from the semi-final performance, they have been anonymous. Their highest score by an individual in this tournament is that 57 by Rizwan in the last game, but those two may be coming back into form at just the right time.

England need Wood back as Jordan doesn't have the same threat, but their other bowlers have been very capable to give their batsmen a score to go after.

Looks like the weather in Melbourne is once again a major concern however. Rain is forecast for Sunday and even though a reserve day is in place for the Monday, it looks like rain is on the radar for then also. A knockout match under ICC rules has to be at least 10 overs a side compared to the 5 overs a side in the group stage but at least on the Monday, extra time has been granted to facilitate a game from the usual two hours to four hours.

I was thinking the same, would have been a mammoth total if they’d got 20 overs batting in.

The fact that India never even took one single wicket in England’s reply is nutsville.

170…Is that the highest ever T20 international run chase without loosing a wicket ? In 2016 New Zealand chased down 169 vs Pakistan in Hamilton..

I can’t find better then 170-0 by the English though.

Making old fashioned teams like India bat first was a great decision at the toss. Plodding along keeping wickets in hand and then exploding will nearly always fall short setting against England. It protects England’s weakness, their bowling. 60 off ten overs with no Wood, no Archer, no Topley. Who cares then if Hardik goes mental, it’s too late.

Bowling wise without Bumrah, they’re solely reliant on new ball swing. No leg spin when it’s a must in every t20 side.

If this doesn’t force India to rethink their whole approach, nothing will.

KL Rahul has topped the IPL runs charts for years while being mocked by his own fans for doing it so slowly, never winning anything. Same goes for a number of their better players in the other IPL teams even including Virat. All want to bat in the top order and bat through the innings.

Mark Wood looked to be bowling full belt in training today so might be fit. Forecast for tomorrow looks a bit improved

Hopefully gets an uninterrupted final, it's been an excellent tournament imo (if poorly attended) with some great results for Ireland and Netherlands.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Tense final, and England's first ever T20 win at the MCG. Not a bad way to break their duck.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Thought the rub of luck went with England more than Pakistan. Boundaries were much harder to come by it seemed for Pakistan. Stokes rode his luck a fair bit, thought he was lucky in that review early on as hit him on the back leg I think. Then he was beaten several times by balls too good for him. Then just when Pak were tightening their grip, had misfortune to get Afridi injured. But why did they bowl him when he was hobbling around? That over was a turning point too. Still Eng got there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,275 ✭✭✭Gillespy

First half of the chase was comfortable. Bit of a wobble maybe but even then it only needed a boundary or two to bring it back below a run a ball.

England have so much batting and Pakistan have form in making a mess of games I doubt the Afridi injury mattered really. It exposed their lack of options with the ball. Livingston was hit out of the attack in his only over and still Moeen didn’t bowl.

The best team won, saw that in the series in Pakistan and the warmup game too. England have too many match winners and a heap more at home injured.
