Which ad blocker?

What do other people do to successfully block all ads please?

I have a Dell laptop with Chrome. I use Microsoft Word via my Hotmail account and also use Gmail. I'm not too tech-y. In an attempt to stop ads popping up on YouTube I signed up to (added an extension?) for Total Ad Block. While it has stopped ads I'm TORTURED with their own ads popping up.

I want to get rid of all ads now and want an effective solution that won't tie me into paying an annual subscription forever.

    Thank you

uBlock Origin is probably the best out there.

I also use Ghostery to reduce tracking.

You say you're not too tech-y, so my final suggestion of a Pi-Hole may be a step too far, but it is a great way of blocking more ads and trackers.
