Brazilian Presidential Election - Croke Park

I noted today that Croke Park was being used for the Brazilian diaspora here to vote in their presidential election.

im just wondering ..

if that on previous occasions has there has ever been a facilitation in a ‘public or private facility’ in this country of a foreign / international democratic election on our soil ? Not including each embassy of course !

who would be picking up the tab for the use of Croker and associated security and logistical arrangements, as well as traffic management in the area etc… none of which would be cheap I’d imagine… ? Weekend etc. so busy enough around you’d need a number of Gardai on overtime is my thinking..

I’ve had a quick gander through several news sources and they doesn’t seem to account for it. I don’t imagine between set up, cleanup, takedown… which would probably be 3-4 days that be all inclusive, that it would come that cheap…

Croke Park have a specific ‘ events ‘ Twitter and general one but oddly no mention of the election at all, nothing on either 😳

US voting is done from here via the post through their embassy. So … surprised that no info out there in the ether that I can see.

The GAA won’t be doing it free gratis…the machinations of the state, Gardai etc of course won’t be either . So..? Who is picking up the tab ? Irish Citizens or Brazilian embassy ?

The French Embassy rents the auditorium in Cork City Hall when facilitating elections for French expatriates (the embassy is used in Dublin). There are probably many other examples.

As for Gardai costs, in the normal course of events, the State pays for Gardai security operations outside foreign embassies as the State is duty-bound under the Vienna Convention to protect the integrity of resident diplomatic missions. Just as other countries must protect Irish missions.

In this case - with it being on private property, I'd be confident the Gardai are charging non-public duty fees to the Brazilian embassy if they indeed requested AGS presence. The Gardai would be under no particular duty to protect the integrity of the polling centre unless they were called to an incident. Croke Park doesn't magically become a diplomatic mission protected by the Vienna Convention just because the Brazilian Embassy is renting a function room /hall there.

It's a commercial convention space and used almost every week of the year for many different things.

Irish twitter is full of sickened anti everything Irish patriot types this morning now that Luna has won. It amazes me the grief they give Brazilians for being in Ireland. I did a couple of years in Australia in the late 00s and every city there was awash with GAA jerseys, mostly young people on temporary visas doing bits and bobs to get by, much like our Brazilian guests.

Croke park is a business and is open daily for events which this is , you’re mixing it up with special licensed events which are limited , as for the “clean up” well the people hired to clean up obviously

I wouldn't have a big issue if it turns out DOFA paid for it. Facilitating democratic elections on a foreign state seems like a nice diplomatic gesture.

The Brazilian Embassy pay for everything.

on Garda costs, they’re paid to ”police” any event. So for example any GAA event sees AGS send them an invoice (county boards get the invoice for non Croke Park games).

In this case, AGS will have been engaged by DFA on behalf of the Brazilian embassy and the Brazilian embassy would get the invoice

The fee the GAA charge the Brazilian embassy would obviously include prep work, clean up etc. Bound to have been a few sub contractors too of course

As a local (within cordon), I wouldnt even have known it was happening if I hadn't read about it. Seems to have been really well organized, peaceful and respectful of locals.

according to the 2016 census, there were 13,000 brazilians in ireland, up 5k from six years earlier; if that has reached 20k, and half of them showed up at croke park, that'd be one quarter the number who'd attend a leinster final. a quiet enough day for croker.

Most Brazilians I know in Dublin - who are ordinary decent people and not homophobic - supported Bolsonaro over Lula.

Lula's convictions were quashed by the Supreme Court of Brazil - the bench acknowledged that the prosecution and court case was a political stitch-up that paid no heed to rule of law and had no jurisdiction. Not an insignificant point. So no, Lula is not a convicted criminal, it was quashed.

Also wondering where you're pulling these "most Brazilians I know in Ireland" that support Bolsanaro. Your sample size by definition is vanishingly small. Because overwhelmingly, the Brazilian diaspora in Ireland think Bolsonaro is a scumbag democratic-backsliding creep, as evidenced by the first-round results from Ireland.

5.5 is as close to 6 as it is to 5 yet you chose the more charitable number for Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro received 18.2% of the vote.

18.2 is closer to 17 than it is to 20. Had Bolsonaro received 17% of the vote it'd be 5.8 Brazilians, which we'd round to 1 in 6 Brazilians support Bolsonaro.
