Do you claim with VHI or Revenue's Myaccount? What's the difference?

Claim whatever you can from your health insurance. Often this is nothing or has a huge excess

The balance can be claimed for tax relief (20%) from Revenue. You do not get tax relief on something already refunded. Physio must be doctor prescribed and not much dental work is covered.

Claim from VHI and then claim for any costs not recouped from them on your tax return for the year.

As others said, claim from VHI first (or whoever) to get the insurance

Then add the remainder to Revenue. There's two amounts on the Revenue receipt tracker.

I put the amount on the receipt under the total amount and the total - insurance refund under the amount claimed

Revenue haven't kicked my door down yet, so presumably I'm doing something right

I think there's a comment section where you can mention the amount refunded by your insurance

If you want you can also attached the claim statement from your insurance company to the same receipt as another image

At the end of the year, when filing your tax return you'll be able to claim 20% of the balance after the insurance refund as tax credits. If you did it the way I said then all the receipts will have the correct amount when they appear in the medical expenses claim, and you basically don't have to work it out yourself

@龜齾虪 paying to have basic paye and medical claims processed is a waste of 10% of any refund. It could not be simpler than revenue.ie

20% is the amount you get on to your tax credits. Nothing to do with VAT. There's no 20% VAT rate on services anyway.

Nope, you get a fixed 20% of the expense amount back as tax credits, doesn't matter if you're on the higher rate. You can also claim for dependents

Yeah as others said, giving up 10% of the refund isn't really worth it, it's a very simple process

Also, general bit of advice, claiming the full amount after you got a refund from insurance is tax fraud. Best not to spread that information around 😉
