Red dot sight for 22 pistol

Hi looking for some advice

I'm about to apply for my licence on a browning buckmark. 22 pistol for target shooting. If I want to add a red dot sight do I need to include it on the original application? If purchased at a later date am I covered to have it on the pistol of I don't declare it on the original application?

Red dot sights don't require licencing for any firearm.

The only time you would need to tick the box for "sights" on your application is for night vision or thermal.

The relevant legislative bit defining the ones you need authorisation for:

"(i) telescope sights with a light beam, or telescope sights with an electronic light amplification device or an infra-red device, designed to be fitted to a firearm specified in paragraph (a), (b), (c) or (e), and"

So a red dot sight is not included in the above so you can stick it on any firearm without having to tick the "sights" box.

Any of the well-known scope brands that have red dots for sale will be grand, I'd pay more attention to the size of the dot for the particular style of pistol shooting you do.

Too small and you might not see the dot in sunlight too big and you might not see the center of the target.

If any of your range shooting buddies have red dots, ask to have a look through them.

Yes have looked on a few different glasses. Thinking of getting an optic with a green dot. Green dot is far superior in the light.

Are you running a FB/CF or 22? One big consideration is the weight, some weigh double of others

Depends heavily on your gun's mounting system too.

A buckmark, ruger mark iv or similar with a fixed rail is going to be an easy mount, you could stick a T1 on there if you wanted.

But for optics mounted on a reciprocating part of a 22 pistol you have to be weight conscious about the dot itself, but also the mount.

Holosun 507K is nice as an open emitter, and at 28g it is pretty light.

Venom is nice, comes in a smidge heavier(31g) but not much.

407C is quite feature rich comparatively, solar backup and light sensing, but weighing a relatively hefty 75g.

Combine that with a mount(if needed) and some guns can have issues cycling fully with a red dot, but those issues are often rectified by trimming the recoil spring.

I had a 6moa red dot scope and I found that it covered the entire centre of the target so I didn't know where exactly I was aiming. That was back when I could actually hit something with it. As other posters have said, it's very easy to see on a sunny day.

I'm going to try a 2moa red dot and take a chance that I can see it on a sunny day. Another problem I have is that I changed my pistol so now I've to figure out a way to mount the red dot when I get it. I've a Feinwerkbau AW93 and they don't have a mounting rail.

I know someone who drilled and tapped the frame of the gun to fix a rail but I'm reluctant to do that.

2moa for precision works well, I tried to cover most scenarios and got one with adjustable dot size.

I got an 11mm rail fitted on my AW 93. You can't put a picatinny rail on cos you won't get the slide off. Fitted on the barrel

Hi,

try the Vortex Venom with 3MOA for target shooting.

There is usually a way to fir something to mot pistols. - for instance it took me a while but i found a picatinny attachment for my S&W Model 17 without drilling it. (But it sits hig on the revolver so I’m looking at another product. Most Semi autos should have an attachment to mount ion it.

Not sure how you will get with a Green dot - the ones i have seen are fairly large and expensive.

The venom i have has an auto brightness function.

I also have a Doctor C sight in a similar size to the venom. Pretty god too.

Not being dramatic. More wondering what kind of "Tom Foolery" some people here are thinking. A torch for weight & recoil ..... on a .22lr 🤣 a laser? for where rounds went on target 🤔 the holes will tell ya where shot went, if you ain't hitting the target get closer, let me educate you, pay more attention to your sight picture than trying to watch a laser 😉 ........... a torch and a laser won't help much 😀

I don't think lasers are illegal or need authorisation as they are not part of a telescope sight but I could be wrong on that.

What I'm pretty sure of is that they aren't allowed in Gallery competitions.

d. Sights. Two types of sights are permitted: i. Iron. Iron sights which may include sights of any colour ii. Optical. Optical sights may include telescopic and ‘red dot’ sights but not lasers which project onto the target itself

I wouldnt advise just taking a scope brand and running one of their red dots, red dots are quite a complicated topic( some would say even more so than rifle scopes) and if you go for a brand you can often time wayy overpay for a pretty **** red dot

Vortex is fine you've got the VIP gurantee too if anything happens

Holosun are very dominant for pistol specific red dots just be sure of your model as some of the older units have issues

And again check your dot size! 6 moa red dots are for carry guns not target guns a 6 moa dot is huge at 6"@ 100 yards is 3" @50 yards 1.5" at 25 yards and thats not taking into account the star burst affect of the dot...

3 moa or less for a target pistol at most

Been running this company on my Glock Vector optics RDSL16 1x17X22 3 MOA dot with an adjustable brightness setting.

Was sceptical about them as they are a Chinese company.BUT built on German machinery and quality controlled by Germans.

They seem to do a good range of optics and so far I've no complaints with it. So if you are on a low budget, these might be worth a look?

Im using a Vortex Venom. Only weighs an ounce or so. Costs about 300 and has the vortex guarantee. My eyesight isnt up to using irons anymore, if I couldn't fit a red dot I'd probably have ditched pistol shooting. I reckon 2 or 3moa dot is about right for a 22 pistol.

Having had to return a Vortex sight under guarantee after 6 years use I was well impressed with how the company handled it. No BS, no argument, simply replaced with a brand new current equivalent.

Ran one of their 6-24x50 FFPs for a long time and the glass was shockingly good for a 250? euro scope at the time have no problem with tracking , paralax down to 15m etc

I would also reccomend them as a company to deal with they have warranties on their stuff incl red dots
