Can people not just have respect for others and have a discussion be it in Afrer Hours or anywhere else. There is no need to be so nasty and rude. We all have our own opinions. I respect that but do not try to force your opinion or ways onto someone else.

And, it's not Boards; it's some of the forums like After Hours. But you know what their raison d'etre is before you post in those forums. Boards has many very civil, enlightening, helpful and engaging forums. If you choose to raise a topic in AH, where you're leading with your opinion, you can expect a robust selection of replies

It's down to moderation IMO..Certain posters know the mods agree with them and get away with anything..

I dunno is it happening across the internet..Could just be symptomatic of polarisation and people not being able to discuss things anymore..They just have their side and feel able to just attack anyone on the 'other' side..

I think Boards, and the internet in general is just a reflection of what the world has become (I appreciate the internet and 24 hour access to social media has fed this).

People have become ruder, less caring, more demanding, entitled and belligerent in the last few years. What else would explain the acceptance of food banks and hundreds and hundreds sleeping on streets or hostels with mostly just a shrug of the shoulders.

A growing minority of boardsies are on boards on the lookout for other posters who they can snark or troll. This has always been the case, but has becoming noticeable since 2017. They have nothing to contribute themselves.

There are a few things at play here.

Firstly and most obviously, the overall nature of social media in general. It's incredibly toxic and remains so by design to ensure maximum "engagement". Obviously, Boards.ie is not a global corporation but the same sort of venom and poison appears here nonetheless.

Of course, there are a few issues with the site specifically. While reworks of Facebook and Twitter attracted censure initially, they at least worked and became accepted over time. On Boards, a lot of users left and so did many volunteer mods, cmods and admins. Meanwhile, quality posters were largely replaced by the usual angry reregs spouting the same tired old nonsense they've been doing for over a decade now.

We're now at the point where people are noticing this and are either posting less frequently or have abandoned the site altogether. There has been some improvement in the layout but the fact it's far short of what's required. What's funny is that many people used to complain that the site was moderated to death and now many of them are saying the opposite.

I'd be sad to see Boards go but if it continues along this trajectory, that outcome becomes inevitable.

I don't buy into all this cleaning the Internet up of toxicity, people are human, we are all capable of being rude and ignorant, sometimes its because we are having a bad day, sometimes due to the nature of the topic, and sometimes its because we are just dikheads, and people should make allowances for these to some degree.

As a society we seem to be heading in a direction of attempting to eradicate natural human traits from the Internet. The reason boards is on a decline is simply because there are more alternatives, and better alternatives in recent years.
