used 1.0l manual petrol kia ceed 2019

so i saw a decent ceed at a dealer that was reasonably close to me.

its a hatchback 191 ceed, with 1l petrol engine, great condition and interior, for around 21k.

took a test drive today. found it nice enough. but when i floored it, i noticed that the car was "stuttering". it was accelerating, but not much. also when i floored it the check engine light went on. said it to the guy, he said might be because the car was standing for 1 week since the last test drive, otherwise it was there for 6 weeks. didnt make sense to me, my 2003 micra often stands for a month when i'm on holiday and makes no noise at all when i come back and start it up and floor it (i do drive it pretty hard). but then again my micra has no turbo.

anyway, i paid the refundable deposit so they keep the car for me, he said they'll check and sort it out themselves or with kia before i take ownership anyway. also they are giving me a 1 year warranty and the car is under kia warranty until 2026. still i'd like to have a car i dont need to claim warranty because that sucks and is annoying. the guy said he will call me when they have it fixed to let me know what was up there.

on my way home i passed another kia dealership. stopped and asked - they had a 182 ceed, otherwise very similar to the 191 one i drove. driving that i instantly noticed that this one doesnt stutter when i floor the pedal, and it accelerates nicely, ie. i can feel it pulling.

the guy from that dealership was the dude that told that this is an issue with the turbo. he said its not a huge deal and can be fixed.

is this a known and/or serious issue? good that the dealer will have it fixed, but i dont want to have this issue again days or weeks after taking ownership of the car.

also when i drove it, the engine sounded a lot like a diesel, much "chunkier" than petrols usually sound (or at least my micra). is this just a particularity of that engine?

how should i go about it? can this be fixed? i know that some cars have "unfixable" problems. is this one of those cases? can or should i say something specific to the dealership to make sure they can get it fixed long term?

They do certainly sound raspy because of the 3 cylinder engine, it’s not an unpleasant sound.

major red flag about the seller for me though. While the car has a great manufacturers warranty, it annoys me when sellers gloss over problems, and also don’t prep a car properly for sale.

so i just did a background check through motorcheck.ie... the car has 2 owners in 3 years which was weird to begin with. the first owner only had it for 2 months only. why!? then it was at 2 dealerships over the course of 1 year and 2 month. then the second owner who had it for 2 years, and its with the current dealer since october.

i dont know... doesnt sit right with me. i mean i cant know the reason why the owners gave it away (especially the first one), but it looks somewhat sketchy to me.

It wouldn’t be unusual for it to be a demo model which might explain the 2 month ownership. But go with your gut feeling.

theres a 191 in the Ford dealer in Rathfarnham for under €19k by the way.

dublin... i'm in south ireland, driving to dublin isnt really an option right now

the thing that i dont understand is, why was this car at dealerships for more than a year? surely it didnt have much mileage after 2 month as a company car ("Private (Company)" as per vehicle check), so why did no one buy it then? was this an issue that existed from the beginning?

i cant find similar ceeds to this one. i really liked this one from the interior and everything, just that engine thing... why does a 3 year old car already have this issue.

2 owners in 3 years is not out of the ordinary. The first owner is probably the dealer who registered the car, or something along those lines.

I wouldn’t really be too concerned. It clearly has an issue but it will be taken care of before the car is sold to you. Just ensure you give it a good test drive and ensure the issue is gone before purchasing the car. If it still doesn’t feel right then ask for your deposit back. If it feels like the other one you drove then proceed with the sale.

21k is very expensive for a 2019 Ceed. Even this one is a bit closer than Dublin, 1 owner being sold by a Kia dealer for 19.5k:

whats the best way to get from county cork to portlaoise? the usual busses here drive to dublin directly but dont stop on the way.

if the dealer does delivery i would be ready to just drive there to talk to them, test drive etc. and have the car delivered, but if they dont and i have to pick it up there myself? how do i get there without my own car? public transport is difficult in ireland...

I'd also contact the dealer directly to see if they can arrange delivery rather than depending on their website.

Don’t buy it blind online, go up drive it and make sure it’s for you, then they’ll probably deliver it to you.

i'll just post this here, i created a new thread for that but user colm_mcm suggested do use this thread:

on my first test drive, i didnt ask very much questions about the car itself or tested all that much.

so if i go again, what should i test in particular, what questions should i ask? i didnt look under the hood, which i will do. but honestly not sure what to look out for. the salesman showed me the boot and that there is a spare under the boot floor.

if you are experienced with buying used cars, what questions about the car itself do you ask? what do you touch, what do you test when sitting in the drivers seat?

since kia will do something about the car, i will ask them to provide the invoice/info on what exactly was repaired/replaced. i will also ask to see the full service history which they said they have. and i already asked them to provide me some kind of official kia info that the car is still under warranty, because i dont know how i could check that myself?

they said the car will be serviced and valeted before they deliver it to me.

i am very anxious... anything else you think i should check out or ask? anything i'm forgetting?
