Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I don’t think he can actually leave out Bellingham but may sacrifice mount for the extra CB in tougher games.

Most dangerous thing (for everyone else) is after days like the young players stop listening and let loose.

You're talking nonsense. He was pulling their defence everywhere and creating space for players to get chances and doing loads of link up play.

Iran would've been delighted for him to hang around waiting for the ball

Good first few minutes from Senegal. Diatta, Mane's replacement in the team, looking lively and dangerous already. This match is likely the battle for top spot in the group.

<edit> senegal should've been punished there though!

Why do RTE have do many sports reporters/commentators/presenters who don't seem to know much about the sports they are covering?

Jon Kenny on comms here. Often here him on RTE Sports bulletins on radio and he regulatory gets the names of players wrong. On TV just now he called Denzel Dumfries "Daniel Dumfries".

Bloody hell, Netherlands tying themselves up in knots to not score. Senegal having a bit more of the ball with a lot of possession in the Netherlands half, but Netherlands look really dangerous every time they break. Should really be 1 up.

    Good open game.

Same with the two commentating on the Holland game. Both made points that Frankie de Jong is struggling to get minutes at Barcelona and hasn't been starting games. He's played in all La Liga games this season bar one where he was injured.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,022 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Good half, very even game. Both having good spells of getting into good areas, creating openings and pretty much bang on shared possession.

Might suit Senegal to sit back a bit more second half and look for the break... committed a bit too much forward at times, which are the times Netherlands have looked dangerous really. Both midfields well able to play some classy stuff for stretches. Could see a cagier second half.

Some downgrade when you think of the great Dutch forwards of the past to what they have to call on now.

Seems to be zero atmosphere at any of the games so far.

There's a bit of a betting ring in the mountain region of this African nation. They have their own Las Vegas in the hills of Senegal. 😁

Janssen is so bad, probably one of the worst premier league dutch players I can remember, sorry state of affairs when you think of the great Dutch strikers.

Senegal badly missing Mane, pure superstar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,022 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Mad how many empty seats there are around the place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,495 ✭✭✭✭martyos121

I’ll never understand how Janssen gets in the team ahead of LDJ. The latter may not be easy on the eye, but he just simply scores goals. That’s kind of what you need in a World Cup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,912 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

If it stays 0-0 between Netherlands/Senegal would be considered a shock? No Mane as well etc.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,912 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

There are always empty seats in some Euro/WC competitions games in fairness. I remember we somehow ended up at Euro 96 match in Anfield between Russia and Italy. It was not planned. There was loads of tickets available.

Edit - I looked it up there now and apparently empty seats were a problem in the tournament for games not involving England.

De Jong could end up in prison for that 😁

Players dropping like flies for poor Senegal.

The Dutch have been dirt in this half. Going to ruin my accumulator only three games in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭cmac2009

Commentator on itv said they've just announced an attendence figure of 41,700. That's 1, 700 over the capacity! Even though it's clearly been 3/4 full throughout.

Gakpo gives the Dutch the lead. Poor from Mendy.

Depends how you look at it.

Netherlands look utterly toothless up front. They have enough swagger elsewhere on the pitch to control most games, but their options up front are appalling.

So it's not strictly a surprise that they can't score.

This GK Noppert has done well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,041 ✭✭✭✭chopperbyrne

8 minutes! Fingers crossed that Netherlands hold on here.

The USA XI looks pretty good. Looking forward to the next game. Wales need the old boys Bale and Ramsey to produce one last time. Going to say this will be the tournament's first draw.

A spectacular and impressive opening ceremony of the world football cup conveying to the world a message of peace, harmony and tranquility, love and compassion. Thank you Qatar, the magnanimous leadership of Qatar Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Al Thani and the nation at large for bringing the world together affectionately.

The Welsh anthem is the first time so far I felt like I was watching the World Cup.

All energy from the US. Couple early yellows from them trying to maintain that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,684 ✭✭✭FatherTed

Two very soft yellows for the US

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,912 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Yeah I looked at transfermarkt, they have a lot of players in the top leagues in the world. To be honest I did not realise some of them were Yanks.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,506 ✭✭✭✭castletownman

Timothy Weah the first son of a world leader to play in a World Cup!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,912 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

I didn't twig that one. Good quiz question. He could have played for France and all. Fair play to him for sticking with the USA.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I wish Darragh Maloney and Ray Houghton were commentating on all the matches.

    Wales are very ragged.

    Lovely, lovely goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,713 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX
