Coming down years for next car

We are at the point where we need to get a 7 seater.

The current car we have is worth 27 grand, but we are happy enough getting a 15k 7 seater.

Would I get weird looks and insulting offers from garages it I go in looking to downgrade, so in essence asking for a car and money from garage?

Would it make more sense to try and see our original car privately?

    Thanks

Insulting offers, maybe. But the garage is essentially buying your car at trade price and has to make money on that car, and on the car that they are selling you, so you shouldn’t be insulted. Not all garages would be open to the idea as its bad for short term cashflow, even though they will make more profit over all.

It would be easier to do as you suggested, but it would probably make more financial sense to sell privately first. €27k is a lot of money to spend in a private sale tho

Stick it into Merlin auctions maybe? At least then you’d be going into the garage as a cash buyer.

    Worth 27k based on what?

If it is asking prices for similar cars on dumdeal then expect any garage willing to entertain paying cash with a trade-in to be offering you at least 5k less.

Stick the reg into one of the car buying websites and see what low ball they offer you first, at least that will give you a base cash price to improve on however you proceed.

I have a relative that tried to trade in for a cheaper car some years ago and none of the dealers with cars he wanted would bite, he point blank refused to sell the car private and ended up buying something more expensive in order to trade-in, still whines about it years later. fools and their money, etc.

Very difficult in these times to value your own car, in olden times the forecourt value of a used car could be 30% or more above the trade in price so if you are basing your value as €27k on retail amount it could be more like €20k as trade in. If your car is in high demand a dealer may be more open to a deal on yours. Selling private makes more sense but can be a long drawn out process as the number of people with €27k to spend on a private sale is low.

Here's some dealers offering to buy cars, might help getting an initial valuation and then guide you with what option is best...
