    Hi all,

    I was released from hospital a week ago after a pretty nasty kidney infection. First uti In years after diverticulitis op.


    anyway it seemed I was retaining urine and was let go with prescription for intermittent catheters which I have to use twice a day. I’m getting tests done after Christmas ( which Christmas they didn’t say 🥺).


    Anyway, my question is;

    Can I use suction catheters instead of normal one-use catheters. I’ve seen pics of them and they seem very similar. They probably don’t have lube or maybe they’re not as hygienic though shouldn’t see why not.

    anyway if someone has been in the same situation maybe you could shed some light and personal experience on this.

    Suction catheters (if they are the ones I'm thinking of, for airways suctioning machines) are quite different to urinary catheters. For one thing, they're much stiffer, the head is rounded but not as much as urinary catheters and you could cause yourself damage. Also, with urinary catheters you should use a "semi-sterile" procedure to insert them and be mindful that they can cause severe UTIs. Not all catheters come in a kit with gloves, lubricant, etc. I know there are some Try and speak with your LDNs, they may be able to advise.
