    The documents requirements may vary between mortgage and rent in the USA. May vary by state and counties, especially if you are applying for low income benefits, or employment relocation benefits, or offsite college/university housing, or first time buyer, or some other types of plans.

    Added to this, landlords that rent apartments, condos, or houses may each have different documentation requirements. This may also require additional documentation if you plan to share renting with an unrelated party.

    There are several web sites that cater to rental properties search in USA. To get a feel, you can surf them. Personally I would not reveal my ID information while first surfing, unless you want to increase the chances of being spam advertised in the future.

    Likewise, there are many mortgage lenders advertising on the web. As well as real estate companies that try to help potential customers and make their sales quotas.
