I know it's not however popping into someone's workplace and telling them you have the right to record (or not telling them) is hardly a way of eliciting a positive response. I've been lucky enough to have no real issues with my licencing over the years though so my softer approach is shaded by that.

    MODERATOR WARNING

Temperatures seem to be rising and people are starting to walk up to the line of civility. So far no one has crossed it but some have come close hence this warning for everyone to calm down, take a breath and step back if necessary.

People need to read the posts carefully and properly and understand the difference between what you deem an insult and someone simply voicing their opinion.

If you don't agree with someone's point then post a rebuttal but reports of posts for a differing opinion will not be acted upon unless they breech forum rules, which so far none have.

The thread will remain under review and anyone who crosses that line of civility will be subject to moderator action.

    Day 11…..

    No update yet.

My references have not been contacted as of today.

No, I’m not expecting things to move this quick, but it’s a break from the previous posts 😀

I have this rifle built in my head, I hope I’m not let down!

  • Registered Users Posts: 937 ✭✭✭freddieot

I would not take the lack of contact with references as an indicator of anything. I've never had a call to any of mine. My friends the same. I think it happens extremely rarely.

    Good luck anyway.

  • Registered Users Posts: 937 ✭✭✭freddieot

I should add that usually the only response I get when things are going ok is the grant letter. This happens between 2 weeks and 2 months depending on how busy they are locally and who is on holiday etc. etc.

If it heads into 3 months I give them a call to make sure it's not stuck in a drawer or something but that does not happen often in fairness.

No harm in giving your FO a shout after a month to see that it's on their desk.

My Garda friend mentioned they have a massive backlog in Blanchardstown at present so I could be waiting some time.

I don’t mind the wait (well I do) but I just want them to confirm they have it in the system and it’s not sitting on a desk in a pile not even processed yet.

  • Registered Users Posts: 472 ✭✭jb88

Every time I put in a renewal or new application in my district I get a receipt from the Garda on the desk receiving the application.

The receipt includes the date, the Garda members name and number and the calibre and type of firearm being applied for. This has been the case for at least the last 7 years in my district.

If you dont ask you dont get. Ive caught a couple of them out for not putting their name clearly on the receipt along with badge number and they have amended.

Years ago a great Super and supporter of shooters put this in place and it works well. That way paperwork doesnt get delayed or thrown in a tray thats not actioned upon. If it is then the questions to where the application is, comes from the Super or Chief.

You leave something in a station you are entitled to a receipt for it, doesnt matter what it is. If you dont get one, its your fault not the Gardai.

Day 25 in the Big Brother FCA1 Application household......

Still nothing. We keep waiting in hope...This will most likely be one of those 3 month application processes....

    Day 32

Got the call from the FO today.

He stated he was happy with everything and it was now going to the Super.

Mentioned I would get an acknowledgment in the post tomorrow or Monday.

Also mentioned that I’m on the list for him to get in and check out the safe and he will call in advance.

Anyone have any idea on time frame from here?

  • Registered Users Posts: 778 ✭✭✭tonysopprano

WE say he has 58days left (as per legislation, 90 days from handing in application) , HE says the 3months only starts now, as he has only put it on PULSE

Until safe is seen and other questions fo wants answered then it’s stalled. Give FO a call back and make appointment for them to call out

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 39,071 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

FO has stated he is happy with everything already. Forms gone to super.

FO said he will call out to lay eyes on the safe alright.

  • Registered Users Posts: 117 ✭✭itisnotgrand

Different approach to my FO who after checking security then writes that up in the report and sends it off

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 39,071 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

Just hope it happens soon anyway.

FO will call me to view safe.

  • Registered Users Posts: 117 ✭✭itisnotgrand

You can also call them and say you’re at home now so call on over

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 39,071 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

    In Dublin?

In one of the busiest Districts in the country?

I personally don’t think so to be honest.

He called me and told me he will be out in the next week or so and he will call me to let me know in advance. That’s good enough for me if I’m honest.

  • Registered Users Posts: 117 ✭✭itisnotgrand

Sit on your hands then and hope. Not sure why you created this thread as you know it all. The 3 months starts now as it’s just gone into their system.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 39,071 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

I started this thread to keep a track of a real time application. There are many people waiting 6 months including members of the Hunting Podcast Groups.

To suggest I ring the FO and “tell” him when to visit is laughable.

The FO has already stated I will be visited in the coming weeks. Why would anyone call back and say no, you come here now!

I don’t care if the 3 months starts now. The process is in operation. I think I’ll survive an additional few weeks.

If it were me, I think I'd be going with the flow, until you hit Day 90. Then I'd be chasing....say 31st March, allowing a few days off over Christmas & New Year's.

While it's clear that there are problems with the licensing system, someone phoning me and trying to tell me how to do my job, and when to do something, would not be well received.

    Thanks,

    G.

Read the attached, from another thread in this forum, paying particular attention to the mentions of 3 months in regard to licences. They can use the 3 months as a deadline to seize your firearm but because many of you adopt a laissez-faire attitude to the 3 months and let them away with their abuse of it, this can cause trouble. The Firearms Act is very clear, the 3 months starts when you hand in a completed application.

    Day 37 Update.

Acknowledgement letter received today confirming application and reference number.

States the 3 months statutory period starts from the day it was received by them, not original lodgement to local station.

We can argue that later if it gets long winded.

Officially decision due before 26th April despite being lodged to local station on 24th December.

But, one thing the FO stated on the phone was that the letter would state this and he had no reason to think it will take that long.

    Anyway, just updating FYI. You

    Day 40 Update.

Just got a call from the FO giving an update that we’re waiting on the forms to come back from the Super. Apologies given as he stated that he usually has them turned around within a week.

He couldn’t get over the fact that I actually lodged it on 24th December but only arrived to him to review on 26th January.

    Hopefully imminent decision.

There are some good FAO's, that do the job properly but are stymied by the system and those that they work with. Your application should have been on his desk within 48/72hrs (allowing for duty schedules) so no excuse for taking a month.

See, the longer that we accept a sub-standard service (in contravention of the actual written law) the further they are going to push it, till as alluded to, in the Wexford paper case, we do nothing and on day 91 we get arrested, firearms seized, and go to jail. (Remember the frog in the pot of water)

As per all my posts, give them an inch, they will take a mile and then you will have to play catch up, but then you are the criminal.
