Rising Walls

Hi,

I am currently self building and have completed the rising walls (18 inch wide) which are approx 4 foot high. I am putting on precast concrete slabs as a suspended ground floor. Do I need to backfill all the inside of the house?

You're self building but don't know what to do. Seriously? Who's going to sign off on this and what about BCAR?

Probably too late now but you need to engage a professional as soon as possible.

You really need to engage a professional and you certainly do not want to rely on an outdated building manual that is very short on detail around two critical elements of any build, i.e. airtightness and thermal bridging.

The 7th Edition is the latest edition- published in 2012.

The 8th Edition has not bee published yet.

My engineer is telling me to fill it more to do with rodents and for supporting service pipes etc. The building regs require a minimum 150mm void for ventilation but structurally there doesn't seem to be a need to fill

Because it's the latest edition does not mean the advice is up to date, have a look at this document (page 6) and notice how it compares to yours re airtightness and thermal bridging ;

Services should not be in the underfloor void- because it is impossible to access same under the structural Ducon slabs.

If rodents can access the underfloor void - then the air vent grills are not fitted correctly.

Proper Air-vent grills - correctly fitted will prevent access to rodents.

There are many houses in Ireland with timber suspended ground floors - that do not have rodent issues
