I’d be fairly sure Mr F that we will never hear the full story on that.

While it's great to see Louise coming to prominence-I see a spate of articles about her lately.

She's not one of the scaffolders I hope.

Playing nine or ten songs on a radio station can do that to you.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,359 ✭✭✭✭thesandeman

It may be just a mock up, but there's an image of her on a billboard being shown on the telly lately.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Frank Grimes

That's fairly standard, I'm not sure either but you'll get things like you mentioned, or some upcoming gig or theatre show and it ends with music updates, entertainment updates etc. on RTÉ Radio 1. I'm not clear why they seem to be presented as public service announcements, I assume they are paid advertisements. Although with all that's come out, RTÉ could well be paying Aiken etc. to advertise these events 😂.

Reports in the media that Louise is tipped to be the 1st female presenter of the LLS, once Patrick Kielty is finished his 3yr stint.

Apparently powers that be have her earmarked for great things.

Hmmmm……based on playing nine or ten records a day?

    Interesting….

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,890 ✭✭✭enricoh

I seen ads on telly for her radio show the last week or two so the bigwigs must be happy enough with her.

  • Registered Users Posts: 68,714 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Wouldn't imagine Louise's tastes would find a home at the Fleadh (haven't tuned in this week yet, maybe she has already been there?) but we'll see what kind of a show she makes of it. No doubt she is like me and mourning the passing of Robbie today.

Re: the ratings/promotion of her, obvioulsly the impact she has made 'playing the few records' has been felt in RTE, they need someone like her at the minute, advertise/promote the positive and al that. The dark rabid dogs to whom talent is imaterial when they need to cock the auld leg will be out for her, but she has proven her abilities at this stage.

Let 'em growl. foam and froth Louise!

I'd love some of what John Spillane is taking

I kinda got the impression that our Louise knows as much about trad as the average punter in leafy suburbs of Dublin - in other words, SFA.

Practically zero trad music content, obviously confused about Spillane's tune titles. She was all over Geraldine Cotter who plays piano (very well) as something she'd know of, barely acknowledged Eamon who is a fantastic trad flute player. Thankfully he rescued it at the end with a few fine reels, cut short for ad break & news. A young lady sang a song, in English for Louise but frankly whilst I'm sure she's lovely, I hope she doesn't listen back in 20 years time as the stage Irishy accent put on the song was cringe inducing. If that's what Comhaltas are teaching, they should be abolished.

I suppose that's the way these fleadhs & festivals have gone now - more about country and gigs.

Fleadhs are best appreciated live. Radio or telly never do what is often far more vibrant and alive (often talentless dirge too) justice.

I find Spillane hard work tbh.

Ah John Spillane is a fine songsmith and very much true to his roots. And he had the honesty to say that he wouldn't be off to the fleadh normally, except he got a gig there. Same for Louise I guess, waste of time sending her to cover a fleadh cheoil. John Creedon would be a better fit.

She's a radio presenter that you can tell is only winging it, giving the impression she is knowledgeable about music.

The song choices come from her producer and probably spotify playlists.

If she was presenting a show on Lyric FM, we'd all think she's an expert on classical music.

Like many young presenters these days, it's a job for her at the end of the day.

    Ronan was the opposite.

Can’t agree on that. Seems deeply involved with the music she plays normally.

It was probably not her choice to do the Fleadh, can’t remember if Ronan did it but it wouldn’t have been a natural fit for him either

  • Registered Users Posts: 68,714 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Wouldn’t agree with Spillane as a fine songwriter either.

I prefer my lyricists to be a bit more robust and mature than his adolescent yearning and faux nostalgia warbling persona.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,047 ✭✭✭squonk

Agreed. I find his songs trite and patronisingly simplistic. I know there’s a whole cork confidence thing but he carries it to the extreme. He shouldn’t fe let bear a radio or TV interview again. He just loves blowing his own trumpet.

Louise seems more comfortable in the world of contemporary Judy and I wouldn’t hold that against her. I’m a big fan of trad musuc but I’d have trouble I think presenting a fleas show myself. It’s a Hebrew in and of itself like classical. She has to start somewhere too. I thought her musical choices today were fine mostly.

'Reports in the media' these days means clickbait BS. You'd have better luck predicting the next Pope.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,047 ✭✭✭squonk

Agreed and you’d have to wonder about the source of those reports too. If there’s one thing we’ve learned from Tubbsgate agents spew out an amount of bullshit articles claiming all sorts of things about their ‘talent’.

I like Louise a lot but a chat show presenter she dies by seen to be. Then again given how they’ve suddenly started pushing her on ads, there’ll probably be the Louise Duffy summer show coming. If they want to give her a show, make it a specialist music show.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,142 ✭✭✭Hippodrome Song Owl

She definitely is getting a lot of promotion all of a sudden. I see a clickbait headline about her being "baffled" by Ronan Collins' "rival show" is suddenly being pushed, along with RTE adverts too.

Before starting to listen to radio just this summer, I was only ever aware of Louise as Paul Galvin's wife, and I didn't think she came across well in any of the articles they featured in about their house, babies etc. But of course these things never give a fair or accurate portrayal. I didn't really know anything about her, but had a slightly negative impression of her - possibly influenced by her husband more than anything else, which is unfair I suppose! I was still happy to give her show a listen though.

I really enjoy her music selection so I like the show, but I don't hear any evidence that she has the right personality for the LLS or other chat show. She's definitely out of place at the Fleadh, but I felt she came across quite awkward with Billy Bragg at the ATN slot too.

Hmm, is Noel Kelly her agent?

    CPL 593H

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,216 ✭✭✭bobbyss

Only heard of her recently after reading an article about her in a newspaper. She mentioned something about being the 'curator' of her music in the programme she is doing now in RTE. The 'curator'? What kind of nonsense is that? Never heard Ronan Collins or John Kelly talk about 'curating' their own records and they know a thing or two about music.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,682 ✭✭✭Red Fred

In the article on Indo.ie she said that NK was her agent a long long time ago. She does have a different agent now but is an RTE staffer in relation to her show.

Why is she an RTE staffer all of a sudden? Ronan was not a staffer, he was on contracts - so why are they making her a new staffer ?

They could've just got existing staffers such as Lorcan Murray, Rick O'Shea, Derek Mooney or John Murray etc etc to present the show ?

It really doesn't take much to keep this show going .......as someone above said play 9 or 10 records

I thought they were strapped for cash ?
