14 from the fourth over. The rate is now less than a run a ball, only one wicket down this should be a straightforward enough chase. No need for anything silly or headless heroics.

Brilliant 77 from Stirling, just 16 to get 109/3

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,473 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Cruising, 20 from the 11th…raining boundaries.

the annoying thing is these scenarios where they get all the plaudits here for the standout performance and rightly so… we have smashed Bangladesh, but the record will show… we lost the series 2-1 against a team we really should be dominating.

Sterling gone, 77 from 41 brilliant innings.. 64 of those runs were boundaries if my maths is correct.

we win… 7 wicket victory with 6 overs to spare…Paul Sterling take a bow.

Wouldn't say we should be dominating, but Ireland were murdered in all the other games, good to see them performing well today

Good to to get a win in the end, but you get a sense overall that Bangladesh are a good cut above us now in both bowling and batting. The test match will be telling in this regard.

Looks a difficult one for sure, but at least they are getting games in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, they have a chance in Sri Lanka as well, they are a ragged looking mob, destroyed again last night, by a mostly second string New Zealand

the test being a five day game will examine every facet of our side.

A 15 man squad. You’d wonder if Malan and Balbernie will make many changes….? Hopefully if new faces come in it’s with improving the selection for the game as opposed to just giving players a game and a chance who traveled out…

Away from international cricket, Josh Littles first IPL over went for 15, including a first ball 6.

  • Registered Users Posts: 729 ✭✭✭wicorthered

Slightly disappointing debut for Little. Had that really frustrating Irish tendency of bowling one rubbish delivery per over. His second and third overs in particular had 5 excellent deliveries and one hit me for six all.

He has that xfactor though. This IPL spell could be the making of him.

Seen lots of very recognisable names from Australia and England have worse outings. His wicket was a good ball and his last over was very good. It’s a tough gig and as you say should be the better for it. Hope he can retain his place and build on it.

Looking forward to the test tomorrow and the two in Sri Lanka soon. Hopefully we’re competitive, how good would it be for Irish test cricket if it goes to the 5th day with a result possible.

Test match starts in a few hours after an almost 4 year wait.

Hard to expect much from this particular Irish side though with 9 uncapped players in the squad and 3 of those never actually having played a first class match. A big Bangladesh win would therefore be expected but hopefully a few of the Irish players can stand up and be counted and make a contribution.

PJ Moor will actually be Ireland's most experienced test player. He has played 8 test matches for Zimbabwe before making the switch to Ireland. No Stirling so Commins will open with McCollum. Not sure if Dockrell plays as he bowls so little these days and is having a poor tour with the bat. Humphreys showed up well in the last T20 and may get the nod with Ben White also having an outside chance depending on the pitch.

Ireland squad (probable): 1 Murray Commins, 2 James McCollum, 3 Andy Balbirnie, 4 Harry Tector, 5 PJ Moor, 6 Curtis Campher, 7 Lorcan Tucker (wk), 8 Mark Adair, 9 Andy McBrine, 10 Graham Hume, 11 Matthew Humphreys

100 up for Ireland. Excellent partnership between Tector and Campher so far. Have had to work really hard and have played some nice shots too.

    is this on tv?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,275 ✭✭✭Gillespy

No, it on a thing called Clubber TV. Never heard of it until yesterday. Irish sports streaming site. Various options I went game pass is €4.

    Moved on from 123 - 3

    To 126-6

    That went downhill very quickly.

You can't really blame the batting today. Most of the players haven't played red ball cricket for 2 years, so obviously it's going to be hard to get into that mind set. But in saying that the coaching staff really need to work on this cross format habit of 3 wickets falling in 4/5 overs. At 120/3, with two set batsmen, things were going really well. Then out of nowhere 20 mins later its 125/6. It happens time after time regardless of the format. It has to be down to this attacking game Malan wants to play. Whatever happened to consolidate for a few overs? Moor's dismissal sounds like a T20 shot, not a guy five balls into a test match. It's very frustrating

Doing OK at 203/8, would be real trouble without the outstanding coverage from RTE, Shane Lowry looking forward to the masters Luke Shaw signs with Man Utd until 2027, Fergal O'Brien plodding away trying to qualify for the Crucible, what's cricket?

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,473 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Considering we were 159/7 where you’d expect a top total of around 190, to get to 214/8 now and still batting is a reasonable recovery of sorts. Be great to make 240 plus..think we’ll need to.

thus far Tector the only player to make a half century, that’s a concern.

Adair gone as I type, 9 down.

214 runs scored in 76.3 overs.

    2.8 runs an over.

remember it’s a newish format for Ireland but the majority play or have played 4 day cricket for their county or club team.

    214 all out.

Not a complete disaster but not great either. A couple more solid partnerships and we might have got 250-300, which would be decent. I suppose on the plus side, we have about an hour? to bowl at them, before end of day. If we can bag a couple of wickets, it'd be a good day overall.

RTE Sport? Most of them are GAA heads with a passing knowledge of golf, rugby & soccer. Other than that, they spoof about the rest on slower news days.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,473 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Yeah still in the balance but by my reckoning there are 10 overs left…. Need a wicket or two, to set the tone as much as to get stuck into their lineup...

a good recovery, let’s see if the bowlers can stand up and take wickets.

Adair takes a wicket in the first over, great start 😎

    bowls Shanto.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,473 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

McBrine takes a wicket with the last ball of the days play. 😁. The dangerous Iqbal gone, caught by Adair. Finish on 34/2. Nice bit of momentum heading into tomorrow.

  • Registered Users Posts: 729 ✭✭✭wicorthered

    Well that ended up nicely!

This what I expected from the tour, a competitive Ireland. Yes Bangladesh have had the better day, but Ireland competed and are still very much in the game after day 1.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,833 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

Huge wicket off the last ball, Tamim is a great player, Bangladesh 34/2, 180 behind, good stuff from Ireland

Best day of the tour so far. When it comes to tests I'm just happy if we don't get embarrassed

  • Registered Users Posts: 729 ✭✭✭wicorthered

Too many boundaries, they just can't build any pressure. I'd say 60% of the overs have had at least one boundary.

Campher is the ultimate pressure release bowler. You take a wicket get a new man in and Campher goes and leaks 3 boundaries in the next over. He's the same in ODIs, he has one 16/18 run over in him every game, usually at a crucial time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,238 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Bangladesh have played well - lost those early three wickets but then dug in and built good partnerships. That's test batting isn't it, just stick at the crease. Didn't hear much of the first part of the day, did we put down any chances?

What are we looking at here? Best scenario is to go through the last four quickly and have a deficit of 150ish. Give them time at wicket and we could end 200-250 behind with near 3 full days of play. Which would require a miracle of extraordinary batting not seen before from an Irish team or the weather to escape defeat here!

7 down now hopefully we can get the last 3 ASAP and start with a deficit of 150 or so.
