Fifa have just returned the group stages of the 2026 WC to four-team groups!

This means that there will be 24 extra games now. The top two teams and 8 best third-placed teams will go through to the last 32!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,286 ✭✭✭✭citytillidie

Update to UEFA Qualifying format, it is still going to be 12 groups with the 12 group winners going through to the World Cup with the 12 runners-up going into the play-offs.

They will be joined by the 4 best Group Winners from the nations league who haven't finished 1st or 2nd in the main qualification. So Ireland either need to finish 1st or 2nd in the main phase or be one of the best Nations League group winners, maybe they should have gone down in the last set of nations league.

CAF has set out their qualification there will be 9 groups of 6 teams with the 9 group winners going to the World Cup and the 4 best runners-up going into a play-off to see who takes the African spot in the new FIFA offs.

CONACAF have 3 rounds with Canada, Mexico and USA already qualified.

First Round will see the bottom 4 teams playing off 32 V 29 and 31 V 30 with the 2 winners going onto the second round.

Second Round will see 30 teams in 6 groups of 5 with the top 2 from each group going onto the Third Round

Third Round will see those 12 split into 3 groups of 4 with the group winners going to the World Cup and the 2 best runners-up going into the FIFA play-off

Turns out that in order to qualify for stuff you have to win a game here or there.

I didn't know that, wow. Perhaps an asterix to remind me? Kidding.

Read up on that and saw that there is a potential for yet another 3 point fine too, linked to their manager, and a "not paid fine" to FIFA!

Not 2026 related but the 2030 World Cup will be hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco all 3 of those will qualify along with Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. The first games for Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay will be played at home before flying to one of the other host destinations.

FIFA playing smart here. North America is covered in 2026, Europe, Africa and South America covered in 2030 leaving it open now to get that Saudi money for 2034

So painfully obvious that it's their plan to have in Saudi. Utterly sickening and again just makes modern football even more unattractive.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,022 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Yup, they'd have given them 2030 if they could've found any way to make it happen, but it was just too much of a stretch so close to the Qatar one. There's zero doubt it'll be Saudi in 2034.

Wonder if they'll still partner with Egypt and/or Greece as they'd attempted for the 2030 bid - I kind of doubt it though, think that was just a back door to get a bit of a 'Europe/Africa' claim in there to distance it from the Qatar one. I'd say they'll go it alone in 2034.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,515 ✭✭✭recyclebin

I bet they will go it alone now and use the fact that 2030 will be in Europe and Africa so can't be there again in 2034. Sickening the way FIFA and Saudi have colluded to make this happen.

I know the World Cup will be expanded by then, but I presume the 3 South American qualifying spots will be subtracted from the CONMEBOL allocation for the World Cup? It's a bit ridiculous for 3 teams to qualify by virtue of hosting a game each.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,286 ✭✭✭✭citytillidie

It is already confirmed only Asia and Oceania can host 2034 so unless Australia go for it along with New Zealand like this years Women's World Cup then its highly likely it is going to be in Saudi Arabia

2030 Fifa banner for World Cup announced.

Six countries. Five time zones. Four f**k's sake. Three continents. Two different seasons. One World Cup.

How have Paraguay gotten in on this? A country with a world cup pedigree not dissimilar to Ireland's

Personally I think the whole thing should be in Uruguay and Argentina to mark the centenary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,286 ✭✭✭✭citytillidie

It should be but FIFA want to give it to Saudi Arabia in 2034 and have worked away to do it with in the rules they have set out.

And they've given Australia a 25 day deadline to submit an official bid if they want to be in consideration. For a tournament 11 years away. And for a decision which wasn't scheduled to be announced for another 3 years.

2030 should’ve been England’s World Cup (although it would more likely have been a UK and Ireland World Cup these days). It is actually a joke that numerous countries are having it twice England have last had it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,516 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

This is true in many ways, but the blame lies at England's door. There's a level of entitlement/naivety in their bidding - by the time they considered a bid (around 2019?) the Iberians already had a decade of politicing under their belt and had wrapped up the support of the other European countries, Africa and South/Central America.

So England (or UK/Irl) might be a reasonable shout for say 2038/2042 but the time to work on it is now. Not coming up with the idea in 8 years time and realising that say Germany/Poland/Ukraine are already way ahead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,984 ✭✭✭ebbsy

I think in 2026 they will have 6 automatic qualifiers and 1 playoff place.

So it is already a farce.

South American qualification is ridiculous at this stage. 6/7 teams out of 10 qualify and they have to play 18 games. Argentina will be basically qualified before half the games are played.

Next Man City manager: You lot may all be internationals and have won all the domestic honours there are to win under Pep. But as far as I'm concerned, the first thing you can do for me is to chuck all your medals and all your caps and all your pots and all your pans into the biggest **** dustbin you can find, because you've never won any of them fairly. You've done it all by bloody cheating.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,516 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

It's hard to know what the solution is though. If they didn't play these elongated qualification campaigns what would they actually do?

Remember they don't have the 'qualification for the Euros' part of the cycle that we do, as with only 10 teams they don't have to qualify for the Copa.

So friendlies is all they could play - and the opposition would be limited with European teams committed to the Nations League and their own Euro/WC qualifiers. So you might just as well play excessive qualification games (which will at least maintain world ranking) even if many games end up as dead-rubbers.

2034 news - as expected this one goes to Saudi Arabia.

The game is gone. I suppose its winter football again and f**k the leagues and the players well-being too.

This from the BBC "Fifa dropped plans for Saudi Arabia to sponsor the 2023 Women's World Cup following a backlash from co-hosts Australia and New Zealand, players and sponsors, but Saudi Arabia is keen to host the 2035 tournament after forming a women's team last year."

"Today, I feel like a billionaire."
