Your sarcasm detector must be on the blink there chief.

    Glazers Out!

To be honest it is hard to tell sarcasm in a social media post without an emoiji or exclamation point nowadays with the culture war nonsense. That Independent writer got what he wanted though - just a clickbait article to get people riled up.

My apologies then. It's hard to know reading some of the comments on here, and as the above poster says it's difficult to detect sarcasm online.

this is a very sad case for sure, RIP. It's hard to know the motivation but form my time living in the US it is obvious that among the black community there are different strata. While you wouldn't think it from the TV, the majority of black people in the US are actually middle class and live in the suburbs. I met several who very much looked down upon certain sub groups within the black community. No different to how many white irish look down upon other white Irish because they have a strong inner city accent or are from a certain area.

I found it quite hard to watch him slumped on the ground while the lads stood around and made excuses for their behaviour.

It didnt take long at all for the claims of "he had his hand on my gun" to come out.

From the fixed camera you can see them lining up kicks to the head and baton strikes to his body, its disgusting that a traffic stop turns to this.

Unfortunately the outcome shows that he was correct to be terrified of these police.

Its some joke they are not all up for murder of the first degree.

    https://manshoorylaw.com/blog/difference-between-1st-2nd-and-3rd-degree-murders/

The american classifications are weird but the video was chilling enough without the Police EMTs showing up and leaving him there to die.

A bullet would be too good for the animals.

A 6th Memphis officer is off the force,

had been on administrative leave since the incident, haven't watched the videos but it says he wasn't present at the second scene,

“The news today from Memphis officials that Officer Preston Hemphill was reportedly relieved of duty weeks ago, but not yet terminated or charged, is extremely disappointing. Why is his identity and the role he played in Tyre’s death just now coming to light?” attorneys Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci said in a statement Monday.

“It certainly begs the question why the White officer involved in this brutal attack was shielded and protected from the public eye.”

Why do 'Merican media say Black and White with capital letters?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,841 ✭✭✭TomTomTim

The official rules, as set by the gods of journalism, AP, say that you should never capitalize "white" but "black" should be capitalized.

AP's style is now to capitalize Black in a racial, ethnic or cultural sense, conveying an essential and shared sense of history, identity and community among people who identify as Black, including those in the African diaspora and within Africa. The lowercase black is a color, not a person. The AP said white people in general have much less shared history and culture, and don’t have the experience of being discriminated against because of skin color.

This is why there's so little trust in the media. As they've to come up with nonsensical excuses as to why "black" should be capitalized yet "white" shouldn't. This is a supposedly well regard new source, essentially openly saying that they are activists with biases.

“The man who lies to himself can be more easily offended than anyone else. You know it is sometimes very pleasant to take offense, isn't it? A man may know that nobody has insulted him, but that he has invented the insult for himself, has lied and exaggerated to make it picturesque, has caught at a word and made a mountain out of a molehill--he knows that himself, yet he will be the first to take offense, and will revel in his resentment till he feels great pleasure in it.”- ― Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

You'll find white capitalised these days in things like White Supremacy, and Whiteness...

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,985 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

Now that ye mention it, yes, it mentions Black for every black victim, but White for every white offender... Any wishes I ever had to move/live/holiday in 'Merica is out the window. Country is batshyte crazy now. They were bag of cats crazy, manageable, but they're gone further now.

In the US the vast majority of the Black population can trace their ancestors back to people who were kidnapped and sold into slavery. In most cases they have no idea what country those ancestors come from. So the only ethnicity they have available to them is as being Black. White people on the other hand in general DO know where their ancestors came from. They aren't left with only the colour of their skin to define their ethnicity. White people in the US regularly talk about themselves saying that they're Irish, or Polish, or Russian, etc. Or frequently a combination of two or more. White isn't a de facto ethnicity. In general in the US when someone does talk about themselves as being white, it is because they're a White Supremacist.

THAT's why the AP rules say to capitalise Black, but not white. Because you capitalise ethnicities, but not colours.

  • Registered Users Posts: 470 ✭✭archermoo

In general in the US a significant percentage of the population will assume that any given criminal is a POC and that any given victim is white. So the news in general only mentions it when that expectation isn't the case.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,084 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

Whiteness is pretty undefined in ethnicity too- like for some in the past Slavs and Italians were not considered "White". Its a nothing burger.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,985 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

Treat black and white differently. Got it.

The cops who called for medical assistance  “withheld” information from responding EMTs, the head of the union representing most of the Memphis fire department said.

In a letter to city councilmembers, President of the Memphis Fire Fighters Association Thomas Malone said the three fired EMTs weren’t given the information they needed to adequately respond to the call for medical help.

This might lead to those cops receiving even longer sentences. They were trying to cover their own backs, but put the victim in even greater danger. A lot of rumors flying about the place at the moment.
