Do I need a land surveyor?

I'm looking to buy a site. The site is zoned residential, so I believe I shouldn't have problems in building my own house.

In order to avoid any bad surprise, should I hire a land surveyor?

Apart from detailing the exact boundary of the property, is it the land surveyor duty/skills/competence to look for possible issues (e.g. groundwater under the soil) that could prevent the construction of a house?

How much would a land survey would cost?

Yes a Chartered Land Surveyor will checkout the boundaries and provide you with an undated May.

Land Surveyors check what is above the ground.

A Geotechnical Surveyor / Engineer will be able to carry out an underground survey.
