Moving back home to ireland with a UK registered car and confused about what to do with it...

    Hi folks,

I am trying to figure out if it is worth registering the car in Ireland, trying to sell it on done deal (someone in NI might be willing to drive down to collect it?) or scrapping it.

I drive an ol 2009 ford focus, its got 101,000 miles on the clock, and is in generally good working order with MOT and taxed until November next year, 4 new tyres, a bunch of advisories on the MOT but running just fine.

Heres where im getting confused - I understand there is customs duty, VAT, and vehicle registration tax to pay (which I believe I am exempt from with a transfer of residence form)

Can I ask if anyone has an idea about what the cost of registering it in Ireland would be - if its likely to cost more than the car is worth... I recon the car is worth less than €1000, perhaps considerably less.

    Thank you!

Sell it on Cazoo. Not worth the hassle of importing it at that price point.

Sell it before you leave the UK. Its basically worthless here. You could qualify for transfer of residency but then you can’t sell the car for a year.

Your car is not worth the hassle of importing and leaving it on a UK plate here and trying to sell it will mean it's worth less than selling in UK.

    Sell it over there.

Now if you have plans to buy a decent car, you should buy it 6 months prior to moving home and then get your vrt exemption and save yourself a pile of money.

Alternative option is to bring it back, fully loaded with your stuff. You can legally drive it here for a month on UK plates. Then bring it to the breakers when you’re done with it.

    Sell it in Britain. 100%.

Whatever you end up having to do with it here, will cost you more than what its worth.
