Throw in good behaviour and most likely out by 25. Not much of a deterrent indeed but you can be sure the Irish Council for Criminal Liberties will be on Matt Cooper this afternoon pleading for us to "please think of the children" and he should be released immediately.

Just reported on news that he is likely to be released after 13 yrs.

No doubt some Legals are working now on having the term reviewed.

Surprised it wasn't a suspended sentence.

I know it’s cool to sh*t on the judicial system because of one arsehole judge, but remarks like the above are such nonsensical drivel.

Ah, it seems that legislation stopped the judge from suspending a portion of it. How frustrating for the judge.

It's already been backdated to when he was 14 so that's three years off straight away. His legal team and the criminal rights groups like the ICCL will make sure to find every loophole possible to reduce that further. If he behaves in prison he will most likely be out by 25.

It’s perfectly normal for sentences to be backdated when an accused has spent their time awaiting and during trial in custody.

There’s genuinely nothing new there.

Just to say, this murder really saddened me. Somebody who travelled more than halfway across the world, to do a thankless job, to make a better life for her kids; and to be killed in this way. Really really sad.

Wrong its been backdated to when he went into custody which was January 2021 you can't just not count the 2 years he's already done like. He can apply for parole after 12 years so he'll before he can apply for parole.

It is a horrendous crime and ideally he'd do longer in jail but lets not tell porkies here.

very little evidence to support that stricter sentencing leads to a reduction in criminal outcomes, i.e. implementing the death sentence would pretty much lead to fcuk all changes in outcomes!

We've had a very lax criminal justice system for generations now, it has resulted in violent offenders with sometimes over 100 previous convictions walking our streets.

They have no deterrent to stop being violent criminals and they just keep racking up more and more convictions and this has in recent times provided an example to increasingly younger and younger offenders commiting more and more serious crimes.

I'm not sure what jurisdiction the evidence for what you're saying comes from but Ireland has essentially made "career criminal" a viable and attractive career option for a huge number of people.

The only beneficiaries of this situation appear to be the legal profession.

We don't need privatised prisons like America but we do need to make criminal behaviour punishable in some tangible way.

First of all there's plenty of evidence if you live in certain parts of the country, the law is laughed at and crime and criminal behaviour is accepted, condoned and even celebrated. It's not some secret that you can do what you want and see very little if any jail time, just look at any new story from the courts and see their double or triple digit convictions. Secondly even if that was the case society gets a decade or two break from them, and that's something worthwhile to pursue in my opinion.

He had 31 previous convictions. Now a murder plus five other offenses (2 and 3 year concurrent sentences for those).. so is that 34 convictions now?

Can good behaviour be expected from someone like that?

Closest example I can think of is the killing of Declan Flynn in 1982. The 4 accused were convicted of manslaughter, not murder, and all received fully suspended sentences.

There's no such thing as "Good Behaviour" in the Irish system, an automatic 25% off every defined sentance.

I'd be unable to put it so reasonably....but when someone trots out the line that no evidence to show harsh prison work as a deterrent I start getting itchy.....its not as if what we've currently got is the solution.

It damn well matters to the victims family and to the society who have to deal with the scum after they are released. I couldn't give two hoots if he's reformed or not whilst he's in there
