This is an absolutely scandalous waste of licence fee money. Spending money on contractors to voice track an online oldies station that generates no money while a bunch of 39ish year old non entities broadcast on FM, trying to be down with the kids by telling them to text in to request their favourite tune while using 6 million per year from the licence fee to keep going

surprised they can't find a home for him on Radio1.

is 2FM not funded entirely by advertising (obviously it still benefits from being within the RTE tent anyway)?

Seems to be the place where RTE put all the old presenters out to grass.

Those digital stations are run on a shoestring so I wonder how generous their fees are.

That’s the end of me listening to 2FM, his weekend show was the only time I’d switch over to 2FM.

Anyone know when this is happening?

I’d have thought he’d be a great fit for a specialist music show on Radio 1 and I’d imagine must of his old 2FM audience are listening to R1 anyway. RTE GOLD is a waste for someone like Fanning.

If you really are a Bebo user in 22, then you're exactly RTE Gold's target audience.

Imagine that. Using the licence fee to produce things people enjoy. Love that it’s add free and plays about 10 times as many songs as Q80’s etc

2fm hasn't been funded entity from advertising since Gerry Ryan died.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,509 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

If you mean that during Ryan's time it was fully funded by advertising, that is incorrect.

Don't know a soul who listens to RTE "Gold".

It’s a bit of an odd one having the “oldies” station on a digital format.

Can they not just remove all of 2fm and change it to Gold with 90% staff cuts?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,628 ✭✭✭channelsurfer2

Rte gold is popular enough especially will leahy and Rick o shea. Roman Collins and dave should add to its popularity albeit its never gonna have in the 100s of thousands of listeners.

  • Registered Users Posts: 862 ✭✭✭redlough

I flicked on 2fm the other day, after a minute Gery Ryn junior came on trying to act like a 16 year old with a popularity segment or something....isn't she 40+, married with children?

Kind of says it all for 2fm

As per Ronan Collins: When your target audience is in the graveyard

"In the most recent JNLR survey, published in November, The Ronan Collins Show was still the most-listened-to music show on Irish radio, drawing 232,000 listeners every weekday."

I've never heard anybody say they listen to it,I didn't ask them did they listen to it but amongst all the channels that were mentioned by people I know who listen to the radio most days I've never heard it mentioned as one they listen to,maybe it's just in my world?

I listen to RTE gold. Will Leahy at breakfast is a good listen with just enough banter and a few new tunes as well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,715 ✭✭✭✭Galwayguy35

He had a good run of it, a handy well paid job for the last 44 years.

He didn't make the mega bucks like Ryan even though they joined around the same time but still did ok for himself.

According to Dave Fanning's statement. he will be presenting the odd Bank Holiday special on 2FM, including the next one coming up (St. Patrick's Day weekend). If I am not mistaken (which I could be!), did he not present programmes as well on RTE's digital alternative station 2XM?

RTE is just another semi-retirement home for the aged!

Anne Dunne was one member along with George Hamilton.

Fanning should have been put out to pasture a long time ago.

I found him condescending the very few times I listened to him.

It is stated in a few different reports that Fanning will be hosting "an new music show on RTE Gold" now there's an oxymoron. RTE seem to have forgotten the other digital radio stations in their portfolio

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,782 ✭✭✭GSF

Will announcing what Ronan Collins will be doing at 8.15 today. Also mentioned Fanning doing both weekday and weekend shows on Rte gold

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,153 ✭✭✭✭EmmetSpiceland

Be great if he was on between 12 & 2pm. Terrible options on radio at that time. Would be a real chance to hoover up listeners.

Haven't listened to him in years. But what ever his flaws he did huge work in promoting Irish bands, and musicians on the radio.

    New line up:

    7am Will Leahy

    10am Ronan Collins

    1pm Rick O’Shea

Here's a plan replace 2fm with rte gold

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,782 ✭✭✭GSF

FM is so last decade. Get yourself a smart speaker and an unlimited data package on your phone and you will never turn on a radio again

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,628 ✭✭✭channelsurfer2

i do wonder what the "salary" arrangements for Ronan Collins will be leaving Dave Fanning aside. Ronan is a contractor not like Rick and Will who are RTE staff. He must be doing it just for fun really given that rte gold's budget is next to zero.

Considering that Fanning had been sidelined to a weekend slot by 2fm for many years, I wonder if any other radio station considered hiring him? You'd think he'd be ideal for a Drivetime show on Nova

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,164 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

I only ever listen to the radio in the car - I'd say a lot of people are the same. Hooking the phone up for short journeys is too much hassle and for longer journeys I put on Spotify. I don't think I've ever heard RTE Gold, I did put on 2XM occasionally when it was on DAB (which I do have in the car).

How can you drive without Waze?? I’d be banned from driving without it. 😀

Dave Fanning has also been presenting music programme for Virgin Media from Whelans.

As long as he doesn't displace ABC to XTC on RTE Gold I'm ok with his move :)

That's the thing with having a schtick......you're kinda stuck with it forever, even when you've outgrown it and it looks pathetic.

Of all the things that RTE have done down through the years, forcing Lottie Ryan onto the general public is the most egregious. A talent-less windbag who was given work based on her name alone instead of on merit, sure why wouldn't she stick with the "catty, yuppie, 'down with da kids' style guff" which has worked until now? What was annoying 10 years ago is just sad at this stage, though.

Hopefully this is the end of the family line in Irish media. It's not that long ago the RTE Guide had an article on Lottie, Babs and the rest of the brood's exploits every second time it was published. Someone in Montrose was trying to turn them into the Irish Kardashians.

More of a podcast person when streaming than radio. I find the mainstream radio just plays same handful of music and its boring to be honest. I do like when a radio jock talks about the music and is knowledgeable about it.

Agree to an extent but he's 66 and that'd be against him. How would you establish a new show on Radio 1 at any meaningful hour that people would listen?

  • Registered Users Posts: 330 ✭✭Stripeyman

I enjoy Will Leahy's show as well, however I don't feel the newer tunes have any place on the station. In fact the reason I first turned to RTE Gold was to avoid hearing the likes of Ed Sheeran, Dermot Kennedy, Harry Styles and Meghan Trainor.

I understand that it's an editorial decision, but if he could just stick to playing older (and IMO better) tracks, his show would improve immensely.

Didn't the Dave Fanning Show switch to Radio 1 there some time in the early 2000's and didn't go down too well?

I heard Dave fanning interviewing rob Trujillo from Metallica in advance of slane , he asked rob who was his favourite Jaco pastorious , the weather report, Joni Mitchell, or solo jaco. Rob sounded well impressed with that question 😂

It's not that it didn't go down well but the then management of RTE radio wanted 2fm to go order in 2009 so fanning was brought Back. https://www.rte.ie/entertainment/2009/0818/418511-fanningd/

I know it’s been days here that Dave sounds condescending maybe. There was a time many mokns ago that I thought he was a bit of a knob but then I met the guy when I happened to be in a TV show with him and my opinion changed instantly. He is a very nice down to earth guy and I’ve seen since if his ehelsns shows which are refreshing Beecher he doesn’t Ray do the shoebox BS and send to have a bit of craic taking the puss out of it all.

tgst RTE Gold line looks good now though. As for people being not too keen on him playing brand new stuff on Gold, it’s be a nice change. One thing that bothered me about the Paul McLoone show when it was on Today FM was that there was too much of playing the old indie classics a lot of the time. I remember thinking one evening while listening that with a few exceptions I would have heard the exact same show back around 1997. So I’d say 50:50 new vs old would be good and show Dave to do what he does best.

I stopped listening to the breakfast show because of the amount of songs he plays from the last few years. I go to RTÉ Gold to get away from from those songs.

Roz Purcell and Emma Power are taking over the 12 to 3 p.m. slot at the weekends.

Rte gold should take up 2fm spot and get rid of all those useless presenters, it should be on FM not digital

It's very easy to say that on radio forums but the reality is that RTE would never get ministerial approvel to replace 2fm with Gold, there would be massive lobbying from the independent local stations against it. RTE couldn't even get ministerial approvel to carry advertising on the News now channel due to lobbying from TV3.

He's incredibly knowledgeable about music. I've had a few casual conversations with him and the sheer enthusiasm he has for music is affecting. And he's interviewed everyone under the sun.

And now he's being replaced by... a model.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,497 ✭✭✭KevRossi

There's an 'interview'/press release on the Indo site with Roz Purcell and Emma Power.

Power reminds us three times in that piece that the number of followers Roz has on social media has nothing to do with her getting the gig, but all to do with her work ethic. Right.

I guess Roz's previous incarnation as a 'foodie' didn't work out. Pity, as we were forced to watch and listen to her numerous times on RTE etc. talking about that particular passion of hers.

speaking of followers 2fm it has about 250k followers on twitter yet wouldn't have much more engagement on their posts than golds twitter of 5k followers. I do wonder in some cases if the followers are actually real or just bought bots ....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,153 ✭✭✭✭EmmetSpiceland

Thought he’d get a “sign off” last show, he wasn’t on last weekend, but instead it’s just straight in with the new one. Shame.
