Is a Freeview Recorder worth it?

So made a mistake. Thought I was buying a Freesat DVR, turns out it's a Freeview DVR.

My fault for not reading properly but was curious on whether to hold onto it or return.

I'm doubtful I would get any UK Freeview channels where I am in Ireland but still tempted to hold onto box for the pause, rewind and record option. Also with Challenge added this month to Saorview I am curious if more will follow.

Wondering what people think. Return it or hold on to it?

The cost isn't terrible but could look to return it and pool that towards a decent Freesat DVR instead.

EDIT: Should add if I choose not to open it I am entitled to return it, not entirely sure about opening and testing then trying to return it, but can check.

Yeah, thats the one I have. Im able to get the Freeview channels and it is definitely a great box for recording, pausing live tv etc. It will also record the Saorview channels but the one thing it is missing for Saorview is the "series link". It can be set to record anything on the Saorview EPG for the week ahead but after that you have to set it again.

If you got it cheap enough and its still unopened you might get more for it on the likes of Adverts. I suppose it depends on where you bought it and what the returns policy is.

Are you able to get the UK Freeview channels?

If those worked I'd keep it but I'm in the Midlands and look to be just outside the overlap range of the east and north, unfortunately!

I'll wait for the return policy response and suppose make the decision then!

Yes, Im close to the NI border so pick up the Freeview channels from the transmitter in Strabane. I'm no expert on this but its very doubtful if you could get those channels anywhere in the midlands.

Are there subtiitles on Saorview channels?

My Panasonic PVR does not show them allow it does with Freeview ones.

Yes, just checked, subtitles working perfectly on Saorview today

Saorview EBU VBI subtitling vs. Freeview DVB subtitling.

While both standards are mandatory in the Saorview receiver spec this is not the case with the Freeview receiver spec.

The Panasonic PVR is a Freeview approved box but not Saorview approved so no EBU subtitling available on it.
