You must have seen some big falls at that altitude throughout the years. What’s the record?

Fairly certain I remember seeing some flakes fall early around 9.30am after arriving at school either end of May or opening days of June 1986. It didn't stick but certainly the latest I remember snow.

Really interesting recollections on April and Spring in general just goes to show that “seasons” in Ireland to a large extent don’t really exist. Our autumn winter last from October to April we’ve a bit of a spring a short summer if we’re lucky and then an autumn that’s transitionary at best!

There was also snowfall at the beginning of May back in the late nineties. That's very interesting about the air frost being possible till early June. I wonder has it ever happened that snow has fallen in early June or late September in Ireland .

I'd imagine June or Sept snowfall probably happens a couple of years a decade on some mountains...

Can't give dates unfortunately but I remember my mother talking about snow in June. Think it would most likely have been in the early 1950s.

Beautiful sunny morning in Galway. The birds are busy after a relatively unproductive day yesterday 🙂

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Lovely sunny blue skies in west cork today! Nice for a change!

12th January 2010, January 1987 and January 1982. Not sure exactly in feet.

In 2010 snow to my waist on the flat. I'm 6ft 3in, pics above.

Lovely day in Kerry, a few very localised showers but good sunshine and calm.

    Bright this morning.

Shower intervals since afternoon. Plenty hailstones in them 😫

Somehow managed to stay completely dry in Trim, with heavy showers passing very very close to the north and south through the day with just a very light sprinkling around 17:00 as a very heavy shower glanced by to the south. Plenty of sunshine today and I got a full washing line of clothes dried outside.

Showers petered off for the kids evening outdoor activities. A lovely but deceiving setting sun. Bitter cold. Hats and coats if not moving. Looks like low temps ahead overnight.

    9⁰ Meath.

Just had a big hail/rain shower in south Cavan, heaviest one of the week so far.

Nice day between the showers though.

Met Éireann rainfall radar doesn't seem to be working for places like Ballina, Co. Mayo tonight. Plenty of showers rolling in and yet none of them showing on the radar. Needs upgrading!

Nice start to the day was sunny and relatively pleasant earlier. That’s gone now and the cloud and that annoying breeze is back. Hasn’t been to bad since Wednesdays horrible day Thursday and Friday had the April Showers that are more typical and what we expect. Glad to see some mild and dryer weather coming anyone prepared to give a guess how long it might hang around for?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,892 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

The mild turn has wobbled alot, we were due for about 4 to 6 days of mid to high teens, now we have more of an easterly so we may get tomorrow and Monday out of the mild then chilly single digits from Midweek onwards and turning more unsettled as the week progresses with a fairly unstable easterly, the sort of chart you want in January, not mid April.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,013 ✭✭✭KanyeSouthEast

Thanks Gonzo so 2 mild days. Jesus what a spring. Cold east wind is horrible at this time of the year.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,892 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

East winds are great from late November to early March and from June to mid September but any other time of the year they are a waste unless you just hope for a dryer pattern regardless of temperature. Unfortunately the most common time for easterly winds is late March to mid May, when they are chilly and have a biting coastal wind chill. Western areas can benefit from a warm easterly from late April to end of May without the chilly coastal breeze bite.

About 11 degrees and cloudy with showers in cork, depressing in April, especially after a gorgeous day yesterday where it was actually quite warm! Ground here is still soggy and soft, with a good dry spell needed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,165 ✭✭✭Kutebride

Frosty start yesterday following by beautiful morning sunshine. Had the makings of a fabulous day. By afternoon it was dark and overcast. Rain by 7pm.

Very damp this morning. Overcast and still. Rain must be only moved off.
