    1983 international 956xl tractor that when you put the pto lever on the pto has loud grinding noise,

    Is the pto lever behind the lift fully pulled up? Sometimes get that kind of sound if it isn’t.

    Have a look at the linkage underneath to ensure it’s fully engaged. Had it before where it kept popping out and it was something in there. It’s hard to say without witnessing it in person, that’s your best case scenario, loud grinding noise otherwise is deeper problem.

    Just was going to buy it if not too serious but what are they like, are they as good as the case 956xl
