Severely fluctuating Satellite signal

I just changed a working Sky Q LNB for a standard quad LNB to connect to a new Humax PVR. A strange thing is happening in that the signal is good one moment & then disappears. I have thoroughly checked the connections. There are trees that look like they are causing a problem, but the Sky Q worked ok. Any thoughts ?

A good picture which disappears, may not be the same as a good signal which disappears. You need to look at the signal readings. If you are doing any adjustments, it would be ideal to have a second person at the TV to see if they are having any effect. It probably has something to do with the work you carried out.

You should check all the transponders (not the West Africa beam) on the link below. Some are very strong, like the one with BBC 1 NI HD, some are weaker, like Channel 5 HD. And some are very weak, usually the minority channels.

This time of year, the tree suspicion would be worth checking out. I know of several installations where trees in the the line of sight caused reception problems every spring, when leaves began to emerge. Sometimes the bare branches were not enough to wipe out the signal, so reception was available in winter, but not in spring/summer. The fact that it worked before, might just be because a particular bunch of leaves, or branches has now emerged as the tree grows, so causing a problem that you didn't have last year.

If the problem is worse in windy weather, then it is most likely caused by the trees where leaves and/or branches are being waved across the line of sight.

The signal is coming & going both on a meter on the dish & on the Humax meter. One second the Humax is showing good signal & quality, then zero signal.

One possibility might be the co ax plugs which are sky installed compression fit. But both inputs have the same problem so unlikely ?

The trees are huge Leylandi so no difference with season.

Is this a standard quad lnb fitted to an oval sky dish?

Issues could also be faulty lnb, dish realignment required .

Is the signal fluctuating on both cables?

Was it installed for your previous SkyQ install with sky wideband lnb?

I've started experiencing this over the last year... for some reason I found that if I give the wires on the bottom of the dish itself a bit of a "push" back in, and slightly wobble the dish the signal magically re-appears after 5 minutes.

The dish doesn't actually move when I wobble it (talking 1mm wobble), but perhaps it picks up a signal and then it continues to connect thereafter.

Also the wires don't actually move either.

No idea why this works but it does.

Signal usually maintains for a few months after that.

Because the issue is down both cables the fault lies at the dish end, be it connection fault, lnb fault, dish alignment issue and/or standard lnb used with sky oval dish
