To be cut to €3500. A bit better than initial estimates as I had thought it would go to €2500.

The Department of Transport has today confirmed that the maximum private vehicle electric car grant will be set at €3,500 from July 1, down from the current maximum of €5,000.

Ireland has a buoyant demand for electric vehicles and there was an 81% increase in registration of EVs last year compared to the previous year, recent CSO figures show.

As of end December 2022, there were 73,574 electric vehicles on Irish roads.

Administered by the Sustainable Authority of Ireland, the EV grant has been in operation since 2011 and has supported the purchase of over 40,000 electric vehicles since then.

Almost €200m in funding has been granted for the purchase of privately owned EVs over the past 12 years.

Zero Emission Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI), an office within the Department of Transport, said that many other elements of the EV grant system remain unchanged.

Vehicle incentives for business stay the same and SEAI will continue to administer the commercially bought EVs and large panel vans grants at current levels.

The small public service vehicles grant for taxi and hackney drivers administered by the NTA was renewed in February, while the Alternatively Fuelled Heavy Duty Vehicle Purchase Grant Scheme, managed by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, has also remained unchanged.

It was pretty much inevitable, however I think if they'd structured the grant amount the same as the VRT relief it would have been better.

The aim now should be to encourage more affordable and efficient cars rather than big SUVs and crossovers

Lots of people going to be cancelling cars that arent arriving before 1st July I think. An extra 1.5k and the high price of electricity.

Lets see how much they really want those EVs.

i thought the cutoff date at least would have been for when they were ordered. If they did that they might even get more orders instead.

We should be cancelling it altogether IMO, in a supply constrained market you don't need a grant to induce demand. This is not a good use of taxpayer funds. I'd much prefer if it was instead either spent on community AC charging sites in large towns near apartments etc or building large DC hubs, or a grant for connection costs to the HV electricity network to ease connection costs for new operators of fast chargers

In fairness, if you need €5k assistance to buy a €45k car, I don’t think you can be claiming poverty.

Same goes for anyone buying a new car. Whether that’s a €30k MG or a €50k VW.

And before you come back at me, no I’ve never bought a brand new car myself.

Jaysus you'd swear they don't want people taking up E-cars. Its already more expensive to charge them per KM than any petrol or diesel on the public charging network. Home chargers are much cheaper to use eys but the initial outlay is rappe.

My EV is a company car. The 5k grant was not available to companies so the boss (family member) bought the car. He then "decided" he didnt like the car and sold it to his company for employees (myself) use. But begs the question, why the hell wasnt the 5k available to companies in the first place?

No clawback on grants or anything so nothing illegal, just pushing weak boundaries that we were able to spot.

If it was just more straightforward I am sure there would be more EVs in companies instead of diesel.

Never said anything about poverty. But people do have limited budgets, and that 5k could either be the decider in either going for an EV or sticking with an ICE car.

Can claim accelerated capital allowances up to 24k in year 1 of purchasing the car to offset our corporation tax bill, assuming we make a profit. The BIK exemption for EVs as company cars is back up to 45k now and the car was 42k after grants so its BIK free all of 2023 too. I am almost sure that the 45k exemption is for the price AFTER grants. But its tiny even if there is BIK due. I will be leaving all this to our accountants though, main thing is we got the 5k grant.

It's hard to argue that a person buying a €60k car has a limited budget. It would have been far better to offer full €5000 grant to €40k, then €3,500 to €50k and nothing for cars over €50k IMO.

As for the reduction of €1500, a lot of people availing of the grant are adding more than that in optional extras, so just take it a it easier on options and effectively there will be no increase in net purchase price

I had an original budget of low 40's but given the MY spec I convinced myself that 46.5k was worth it however it's still a big chunk of change for me. If I have to pay an additional 1.5k I will probably cancel and a) wait a little longer to see how the market plays out or b) purchase an Ioniq or Niro

I know somebody who works in sales, visiting shops etc. Company supplied them with PHEV's. No incentive or requirement to use them on electric mode or charge at home.

I can envision the press release though, how they are moving towards sustainability while flogging, for example, carburys Easter eggs shipped around full of air and packaging.

We should be reducing the size of cars at a bare minimum in phase one.

To really deal with this on a global level we need a sledgehammer approach, not tinkering around with a jewellers screwdriver.

Both points incorrect Ted. Theres no VAT reclaim allowed on private vehicles, even if they are electric. Commercial vehicles only allowed VAT reclaim, vans, trucks etc...

And there is no BIK due on the first 45k value of an EV, making my EV BIK exempt as its under that threshold.

Maintain the existing car fleet for longer. Grants for repairs to older cars rather than scrapping them. Incentivise people to hold onto older cars rather than consigning them to the scrap heap.

Ban new cars. Don't be ridiculous. Every car has a shelf life of so many years. Its not like every time someone buys a new car the old one gets binned. It's passed on to the next person.

Aldo, what about the big elephant in the room with the grant? It goes straight into the dealers pocket. If it's reduced by €1500 then it will help stabilize car prices and stop all these price hikes every 6 months by the car brands.

Never suggested banning new cars.

Many cars are thrown on the scrap heap long before they should/could be. It usually a case of something big comes up that's more expensive to fix than the car is worth that end up with the car on the scrap heap..... I would argue that from an environmental perspective it would be generally much better keeping that car on the road.

If you've ever been to France,Spain,Italy or even our nearest neighbours in the UK you will see a lot of cars over 20 yrs old still on the roads.Us Irish seem to think a car is scrap when it's 10 yrs old,madness really and scrapping them and buying a new electric car is only adding to higher carbon emissions.

Installation charges for chargers is the big scam, electricians being fully aware there grant is there for customers. I bought a €450 charger from Elli for this reason which really put out the electrician that he couldn't install one of his over priced zappis. Same with solar panels. All the grants do is push up the price. The end buyer gains nothing from it.

15 years old and still going. It's nothing special but it does her for what she wants it for mostly short journeys.

I agree people shoukd keep cars longer. I was really annoyed when my Dad changed his last Sportage for what was basically the same car but just a mild hybrid now and with a smaller boot and a different colour. He himself even admits he preffered his first mk4 Sportage over the mild hybrid one. He should have waited till the new model was out and got that. At least then he would have a brand new car. He does not wantvthe hassle of NCT tests do so trys to change every 3 or so years. Crazy.
