I am looking to buy a Toyota RAV 2.0 L diesel 2017-2018, I was told to avoid one with a BMW engine, what are the obvious differences between

the Toyota and BMW engines when one opens the bonnet? Thanks in advance for any advice.

BMW N47 engine has been fitted to the Rav4 since November 2015, so any Rav4 manufactured after this date will have it.

Defo BMW engine. Best avoided unless you like paying for expensive repairs.
