Hello , so basically I have finished my 12 lessons and waiting indefinitely on my driving test, driving insured for nearly a year on my partners 152 audi A3 with her sitting on with me. I bought my own car it's a 172 audi A5 but I can't get insured at all , like no quotes anywhere ive tried... is there a way around it by paying extra or are you just stuck until you pass? They're basically saying no because of 2.0l engine. I'm 25 now , started lessons 7 years ago but only did 2 so I resumed them again last year

This comes up all the time. If you're a first time driver in Ireland (doesnt matter what age) check the price of insurance BEFORE buying the car.

Anyway, that doesnt help you, so let me try to help. First- forget online. Just forget it. All the online quote engines will either give you a 'no quote' or 'please call us' since you don't meet their fairly strict criteria. Call a broker, or go visit a broker office or an insurer's office- FBD and AXA have offices around the country. The broker or the branch sales person will have the ability to contact the underwriter to make a case for you. I can't stress this enough- you haven't a hope of getting any kind of sensible quote online.

Some brokers specialise in young/inexperienced/convicted drivers- Britton in Donegal is one. Give them a call.

Add your partner to your policy as a named driver when you're looking for a quote, it should bring the quote down.

You'll have less trouble getting a policy after you pass your test. There used to be a way of getting a faster appointment if you could get a letter from work saying you need a driving licence to do your job- not sure it's still the case.

Best of luck with both the test and the quote hunting.

Thanks for that , yeah I already had an older 2012 A5 and had the same issue so I kind of knew I wasn't getting one easily anyway with the newer car either. I had just accepted I probably won't be able to drive it till I get my test which is suppose to be anytime within the next 2 weeks but who knows. I did ring up a few just one the phone but they had the same "ah it's a 2 liter engine we don't insure that on the provisional but call back w/ full licence"

Going to give those a go today hopefully they give me some kind of quote.

What engine is in the A3? …..1.6?

if you can get quotes for that car then swap them to each other.

If I put my gf on my new car and I go on the A3 u mean? Yeah 1.6 in that

🤣should be safe enough , wasn't a direct no when I tried one of the brokers today they took all my details and said they'd get back to me tomorrow with quotes... we'll see what happens but won't get my hopes up

you'd be looking at 3,500 for 1st year with full licence and go down about 500 per year after that with an Audi A5. You have no experience only 12 lessons. you should have bought a corsa and insurance would be 1900 and after a year move up in engine size and you have a better chance of insurance going lower. My son & daughter did it that way. paying 190each for 1st year. They both on 4 yr and 2 yr no claims insurance at €900 for 1.9 golf 4yr ncb and €1100 for 1.9 passat 2yr ncb

NB 1900 each for 1st year with corsa

4100e for the first quote I managed to get, at least it's a quote albeit expensive asf. I knew it'd be something like that. At least it's something now and not a complete NO. I'll shop around abit more to see whether I can get it any lower. And yeah definitely the more practical decision to go for the smaller engine , just impatience on my end 🤣 and wanting that car for a long time.

You have to change the ownership of you're Girlfriends A3 to you because you can't insure a car in that you don't have an insurable interest in, so you're going to be adding another owner to both your cars as you'll need her to be the owner of your A5 for her to insure it. Only married people can insure a car in their spouses name.

Then you will run into fronting issues if you mainly drive the A5.

Since the Consumer Insurance Contract Act 2019 which came into being in 2021 insurable interest and policy operation for policies for consumer has gone through a bit of a change. You DONT need to have an insurable interest in order to have a policy in place

    Thanks, didn't know that.

They still have the fronting problem though.

I ended up getting a much better quote after ringing basically everyone , got insured for 2300 with me as main driver and with my partner as a named driver which brought it down. Not bad for the car it is and alot better than 4500 , got one quote of 7 grand as well , madness. I went ahead with that and was able to get it taxed as well.
