Are there any banks that don't need a Banking App to be used?

I'm trying to cut down on my smartphone use to the bare essentials, even to the point that I'm considering downgrading to a dumbphone to try out.

Are there any banks where I don't have to use a Banking app to confirm purchases, get notifications etc? It's such a pain at times considering how awful most banking app UIs are.

Not that I know of, and the way banking is going its going to be near impossible to do anything without online access.

You may be able to use computer for some things but I'd suggest just having an old smartphone in the house for necessities like banking. Don't download any other apps and keep it in a drawer away from you.

I do get what you're saying about hating smartphones but exercising your own restraint and moderation is key here not ditching the technology altogether. You'd lose whatsapp for example and I'd guess contact with most people you know would be lost without it too.

No not at this stage. There is too much fraud around for any bank to offer such a service and it is very unlikely that many people would have any confidence in such a service.

There are some banks who use one time pass codes delivered by SMS to satisfy 2FA. Certainly my U.K. and Hong Kong banks do (as an optional alternative to in app confirmation). On the Irish side, I use AIB and I don’t think I’ve seen one time pass codes.

2FA is a legal requirement; and SMS 2FA is a terrible terrible terrible idea... however, most credit unions doing current accounts still do it.

Wouldn't be something to expect to stay functioning long-term.

At work (A National School) we have one old smartphone that we treat in a similar way to the old chip and pin reader of old. It has nothing but our banking app and our Revolut app installed. Neither app requires mobile connectivity and is simply connected to WiFi. It's kept switched off and locked in a drawer next to the PC on which we do our banking.

PTSB have a desktop banking app. It requires more authentication to log in than the PTSB phone app (that is once the phone app is set up).

Basically, SMS is not secure at all; and should someone be able to intercept your SMS messages you often turn the 2FA in to 0FA - they can use the password reset functions to get the password too.

Criminals will easily find someone working in the support or retail structures of a mobile network to get them a new SIM for a target account. Lots of minimum wage (or less, if outsourced abroad) staff who are about to leave anyway etc.

An OTP is a text message with a code. Any phone from about 1996 onwards should be fine.

I'm sure if you ask at bank for access without using a smartphone they will be able to do something. Probably means they give you a separate code generator though.

So I gather it's better to select password/code delivered via app rather than sms if you have a choice?

Or if they get to someone in the phone company presumably they can take over get info from the app too?

Approval via app usually requires a PIN or biometric authentication to be entered before you can approve.

All banks provide services without needing smart-phone app. I currently bank with AIB and do not use phone/internet at all for my account. Call the number on the back of your card - you simply need to "unregister" for online banking - your account will instantly be reverted back to a regular account. You will no longer have access to any phone/online banking features, you can then get paper-statements once a month. You can still use your card for purchases in shops and online. If you change your mind again in the future,call the number and "register" the card for online services.
