Sad case In liverpool of 9 year old girl shot dead last Summer after drug dealer Tommy Cashman was trying to kill some other drug dealer who ran into the girls house.

Two things which are interesting are how quickly the cases in UK get to court, 9 months done and dusted. Secondly minimum 42 years ( no messing there) ...hed have got less than half that sentence in Ireland and with some judges in Ireland he might even hace got a suspended sentence!

Life in Ireland means you can serve a lot more , we’ve prisoners who have 35 years so far and a couple more who’ve served 40 plus years.

Again, unfortunately facts get in the way with here. Average life sentence in Ireland is around 20 years.

Yes maybe 20 but in England life means life literally with minimum tariffs , in this case a minimum of 42 years at least .

Incorrect. I read an article last week, using stats on this from 2021. Of the people released from prison in that year who were in prison after being convicted of murder, the average sentence they served was 21.5 years.

The minimum was increased from 7 years to 12 years in the recent past, so how could the average then be 12.

U should do some research before posting in future.

Mandatory weeks detention and observation for anyone in possession of Class A drugs or with them in their body, not released to public until they're clean.

It's the average of the time served. Murder has a mandatory life sentence, so in all cases the sentence "handed out" is life (although a judge can set a minimum on the time to be served before parole is possible).

It's the average time served by those who have been released. But of course the more serious your crime, the more aggravating factors that are present, the longer will elapse before you are released, so the more serious a case is, the less likely it is to be reflected in the average figure.

John Shaw has been serving a life sentence since 1976 and has yet to be released. The 47 years he has served so far is not reflected in the average figure. His co-accused Geoffrey Evans served 34 years before dying in custody. As he was never released, I don't think his stint is reflected in the average either. And there would be other long-serving lifers still in custody and not reflected in the average.

But release for life-sentence prisoners is parole and so has conditions attached, e.g. avoiding contact with murder victims' relatives.

They do. But it's not a power they that will necessarily exercise on every occasion on which exercise is possible. They will make a judgment about the best way to move the proceedings forward, and that may not be dragging a reluctant prisoner into the dock.
