Turntable & Active Speaker Query

Hi, I’m wondering if you can help with a query I have regarding Turntables and Active Powered Speakers. I am considering upgrading my Vinyl set up at home for better sound without spending a fortune as I now that you can spend thousands on a great vinyl set up. I currently have an old basic Bush Acoustics MTT2 Turntable and have it connected to a Pioneer Mini Hi-Fi. The sound is pretty decent but I am looking to upgrade the sound so my query is, would you know if I would be better off buying a set of really good Active Speakers like the Q-Acoustics M20 and connecting the existing turntable into these to upgrade the sound or would I be better upgrading the turntable itself to something like the Audio Technica LP3XBT and connecting this to the Pioneer Hi-Fi? I know there’s no exact answer to this but I’m just looking for guidance as to which unit I would be better off upgrading now in order to get better sound from my existing set up. Thanks

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

If it was me I would upgrade to the Active speakers first as this should give the most noticeable increase in quality.

The M20 are currently priced at 419€ for the black version.

Hi Kenny,

Thanks so much for the advice. In terms of the Q Acoustics M20 vs the Klipsch R-41PM, which of these would you recommend for pure sound quality? The below comparison website seems to suggest that the Q Acoustics is the better all rounder but would be grateful for your opinion as someone who has probably heard both in action.

Hi Hendrickp.

Personally I prefer the Klipsch over the Q Acoustics.

For me they have a more controlled bass which suits the type of music I would listen to a home. The M20 would be more refined.

You will be happy with either set to be honest but for me the Klipsch just have the edge.

Just coming back to you on these speakers. I am thinking of going with the walnut Q acoustics as they would look better in my set up. Just before I move ahead with this, I just wanted to double check if there's any Boardsie deals with these?

I hope you don't mind me replying on Kenny's behalf while he's off.

We don't have an awful lot of movement on the M20s but I could do a Boardie special of £369 on the sterling price. To be honest though the euro price is already working out better than the sterling so the 399 euro price would be the best option including delivery!

Hi Guys,

I just want to follow up on my purchase of the Q Acoustics M20 HD speakers to just say that as usual the service from Richer Sounds was fantastic again. This is my 4th or 5th purchase from yourselves over the last few years and the quality of the service is second to none. The speakers turned out to be exactly what i needed as they have hugely enhanced the sound from my old turntable to the point where i'm considering not even upgrading the turntable. Incredible sound quality from these speakers. Highly recommended to anyone reading this.

Hi I have a question about a vinyl turntable I have, I think the needle might be damaged and I'm wondering can this affect the sound at all as hardly any sound can be heard when playing a record , the speakers are grand as I have tried them in someone's house . The record player is audio technica and I have not used it much over a the few years I have it.

If the needle was damaged it was greatly effect the sound quality.
Which model of turntable do you have as some of the Audio Technica ones have a switch on the back of them to turn the phono stage on and off.
I would check the switch is in the correct position for your setup, as if no phono stage is used then it can also cause very low volume.

If your amp does not have a built in phono stage then the one in the turntable will need switched on.

Sorry for late reply , the model is at-lp3. I noticed that swith in the back and have tried it before and it's still the same , can barely hear any sound whatsoever.
