    Hi

I have pieces of cherry blossom wood which are well seasoned. I was thinking of carving an anniversary gift something like this YouTube video.

Is wood from a cherry blossom suitable for carving? The wood has been seasoned over ten years.

can you recommend a set of tools?

do you need a template before carving.

what type of varnish would be applied to the finished product?

    is it difficult

    Thx

the carpentry store in naas would have sets of carving tools worth a trip up to them. also in the video they are using lime or basswood which is quite soft and easer to carve than the cherry, so perhaps start with a piece of lime and move on to the cherry, you can get lime in the carpentry store as well.

Carving tools are very expensive by their nature as quality tools are. You will see cheaper sets that you should avoid at all cost, total waste of money. You could possibly pick up some good quality tools at a boot sale for small money, until you actually get to try out carving to see if you do like it. Its very easy to buy expensive tools, and choose an inappropriate timber and then get disgruntled at your first attempt.

A couple of lessons with a wood carver would be money well spent.

I carved this 12 months ago for my sons wedding, from a piece of Yew.
