Refusing to pay fine. What would happen

I know we're not allowed to talk about "those people" and "that case" but in theory... what is done when a tool refuses to pay their fine. Why would they be released from custody when they have no intention of accepting the verdict. Surely you hold them until they cop on?

It gives one food for thought at the lack of teeth of our justice system

Well, in the specific instance you're talking about he was released from prison in part by request of the school so that they could hold the long delayed disciplinary meeting and fire him. If he had stayed in prison they wouldn't have been able to fire him. The judge would rather not send him back to prison, which is why he is using the daily fines instead. Part of the reason the judge has stated as to why he doesn't want to send him back to prison is that he felt that he was getting something out of it. But he has also stated that he hasn't ruled it out.

AFAIK there is a formula where an attachment to earnings or community service is an option.

The day of imprisonment for a few hours is gone I believe

Would there not just be a lien against his earnings and then if he went to do anything re his tax affairs(first time buyers grant) or even just get a loan that he would be unable to get anything
