Maths Teaching

Hi everyone first pose here so I hope this ends up in the right place. I've been considering a career change and am looking at Maths teaching as it was always one of my favourite subjects and I see alot about the demand for STEM teachers. Lately I've noticed a lot in the news about teachers quitting/emmigrating and I'm now wondering what's the cause and if anyone here has anything they could share? Is it similar to Primary teaching where permanent positions aren't that plentiful? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Most teachers can't afford to rent their own house and are sharing houses with other teachers.

If you want to own your own house someday I suggest you use your maths skills to become an actuary or financial analyst.

According to the ASTI website starting salary is now 42k?

National avearge is supposedly around 45k.

Aren't most people in the same boat money wise currently? Or is it because those teachers arent getting enough hours?

If you like maths/ science and enjoy teaching in it's various facets - then try for it. Forget the naysayers.

Financial analysis and actuarial services are easily outsourced and often are to India or automated. On top of this the banking sector has contracted dramatically over the past decade or so and two banking are exiting the Irish market. I really would not advise anyone to go down those paths. STEM skills are more marketable.

Here's an exercise for you..

Find out the average house price. Find out the starting salaries of teachers, that can be topped up with payments for exam supervising and marking. Then you'll see how affordable a house is even for a teacher couple just starting out in their career. And this is in the middle of a housing shortage.

It is far from shit pay. Don't fall for the spin, lies and propaganda from teachers.

Single applicant mortgages for houses are in the minority by far. Single people tend to house share or buy apartments, not houses. This is not unique to teachers.

Looking at the undergrad route as my current degree dosen't meet maths requirements, are there conversion courses available?
