Contract notice period

Sort of wondering, my employment contract says I have to give 3 months notice, but if the company chooses to terminate me they have a 1 month notice. Appreciate any contract signed is just that, but is that normal or legal for them to put down? I sort of always assumed notice period was a two way street.
